A Beautiful Mind, Moulin Rouge Rule the Golden Globes
The 59th annual Golden Globes aired Sunday night and had a Down Under theme as Russell Crowe and Nicole Kidman walked away with Best Actor awards.
The 59th annual Golden Globes took place Sunday night with A Beautiful Mind taking the Best Motion Picture-Drama award and Moulin Rouge taking the Best Motion Picture-Musical or Comedy award. In the end, A Beautiful Mind, nabbed four awards; Moulin Rouge had three and Sex and the City tied with Six Feet Under with two. Russell Crowe (Best Actor in a Drama) thanked the real life Nash family, John and Alicia, for "living such an inspirational love story." Nicole Kidman (Best Actress in a Musical/Comedy) said she "never thought [she’d] be in a musical, let alone win an award for it."
The heavy hitters, The Sopranos and The West Wing (with three nominations each) and Will & Grace (five nominations) walked away with nothing while the rookies stepped up to the plate and hit homeruns. HBO’s Six Feet Under and Sex and the City walked away with the Best Television Series-Drama and Musical/Comedy awards respectively. Best Actor/Actress in a Television Series-Drama went to Kiefer Sutherland for 24 and Jennifer Garner for Alias. Best Actor/Actress in a Television Series-Musical or Comedy went to Charlie Sheen for Spin City and Sarah Jessica Parker for Sex and the City. Best Actor in a Motion Picture-Musical/Comedy went to absentee Gene Hackman for The Royal Tenenbaums and Best Actress in a Motion Picture-Drama went to Judi Dench in Iris.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s Cecil B. DeMille Award was presented to Harrison Ford for "outstanding contribution to the entertainment field." Ford said, "In anticipation of tonight, I wrote two speeches-a long one and a short one. I’ll give you the short one: Thank you, but it seems there might be enough time for the long one as well, which is: Thank you very much."
