Ohm…ohm…ohm…

That’s what many people think of when the topic of meditation comes up. A bearded, rail-thin guru seated in the Lotus position attempting to contact the "greater existence." The truth is that millions of people worldwide, from housewives to corporate executives, practice some form of meditation based on Eastern philosophies.

Being everything to everyone is the main goal of Free Meditations (www.freemeditations.com), a website with links and reference information on just about every form of meditative technique available. Although the site is cryptic on the background of its creators, it offers a wealth of information free of charge.

"The aim of Free Meditations is to bring inner peace within our self and the world in a positive and spiritual way," reads the home page text of the site. "The world is not a peaceful place and within every soul there is some form of tension and stress. It is therefore essential to create positive and peaceful thoughts to bring peace to our mind. Meditation is one of the best methods to bring about transformation and nurture the natural qualities within."

Free Meditations also offers a perspective for the prospective meditation practitioner.

"The best way that we can create that change is to change our thoughts from being negative to positive," site administrators write. "The positive discovery about meditation is that we are focusing within our self and becoming free of negativity. Meditation techniques simply involve a process of transforming yourself, your thoughts, and recognizing the negative thoughts, and changing them into positive and peaceful thoughts. The best attitude towards meditation is to be very patient as the mind does not always want to focus. Having a sense of expectation towards positive results can create uncomfortable pressure and thus take away the enjoyment of the experience. By practicing meditation regularly, the person whom meditates gains a wonderful sense of the self."

The site provides information on a variety of meditation schools, including transcendental, raja yoga, sahaja yoga, and Buddhist variants. It also offers a host of information on Western meditation techniques such as positive thinking, visualization, and even Christian meditations.

Visitors can find original content on the site, in addition to advice, such as specific meditations. "Open my mind’s eye so I may see and feel your shining light presence close to me," begins a personal meditation by Ruth Ann Mahaffey, one of the site’s contributors. "Give me inner strength for my stumbling feet as I battle the crowd on life's busy street. And widen the vision of my unseeing minds eye so in passing faces I'll recognize not just a stranger, unloved and unknown, but a friend with a heart and soul that is much like my own."

Included in the site’s content are links to various organizations and advice sites for pursuing meditation as a way of reducing stress, improving health, and developing a more positive outlook on life. The site also includes information on meditation for prosperity, anger management, physical and mental healing, and even astral travel.

Perhaps one of the most notable features of Free Meditations is that it has no advertising banners or pop-ups to bog visitors down when looking for meditation information. This lack of a commercial angle may seem to be the underpinning to the site’s title, but it appears to be more than printed lip service. Free Meditations does offer a link exchange, but this seems to be primarily geared toward beefing up the links page rather than simple promotion.

Whatever the meditation interest, visitors to Free Meditations will find a wealth of information categorized for a simple, stress-free browse. And not only will your browsing be interesting, it may prove to enhance or improve your life.
