New Zealand: Wellington: Capital City and An Artistic Center

With its newfound fame as a popular spot for movie settings, the capital city of Wellington is on the rise as a popular tourist destination in New Zealand.
Wellington is New Zealand’s capital city and is considered the country’s artistic center. This city of 157,000 has a cultural sophistication that is most often found in much larger metropolitan areas. With the city happily situated between mountains and harbor, Wellington offers tourists a new taste of the country. Accommodations and restaurants are affordably priced, making the city an inexpensive travel destination.

To get a detailed look at the history of the city, visit the Museum of Wellington City & Sea on Queen’s Wharf. This converted historic warehouse gives visitors a feel for the history of Wellington as well as the country’s history. The harbor in Wellington is a popular spot for water sports, such as kayaking and rowing. Civic Square, in the heart of the city, has a walk-through pyramid, public library, art gallery, and symphony hall. For something unusual, visit the Te Papa museum, which features Maori art and artifacts from Wellington’s Polynesian, Asian, and European roots. The Botanical Gardens are a popular attraction in the city and feature the Lady Norwood Rose Garden.

Wellington has come into its own as a new tourist spot for visitors touring the island of New Zealand. In contrast to the business and industrial feel of Auckland, Wellington offers travelers something different; a chance to experience the culture and history that is also a part of this island country.
