Face Transplant Surgeon Plans More Operations
The French surgeon who carried out the world's first face transplant last November said yesterday he had plans for five similar operations even though his first patient came close to rejecting her new nose, lips and chin a month after receiving them.
Jean-Michel Dubernard said at a medical conference in Arizona that the woman from northern France, who was disfigured by her dog, needed massive doses of immune-suppressing steroids after her system tried to reject the grafted tissue.
But she is now doing so well that she can walk in the street without attracting attention.
