Gerald Ford, the president who steered the US through the aftermath of the Watergate scandal, was admitted to hospital in California last night with pneumonia.

Mr Ford, 92, a former college football player, was "resting comfortably", a spokeswoman said. No further details were immediately available.
Mr Ford, who became president in 1974 following Richard Nixon's resignation, failed to win election to the post in 1976. But he was instrumental in building the careers of several prominent Republicans, including the vice-president, Dick Cheney.
