BOXING: Judah Knocks Out Green
International Boxing Federation (IBF)Junior Welterweight Champion Zab "Super" Judah won his sixth straight title defense against former North American Boxing Federation (NABF) Champion Reggie "Showtime" Green.
International Boxing Federation (IBF) Junior Welterweight Champion Zab "Super" Judah won his sixth straight title defense against former North American Boxing Federation (NABF) Champion Reggie "Showtime" Green on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING, Saturday, January 13, 2001 at the Uncas Pavillion at Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut. On the undercard, hot young prospect Juan Diaz scored a unanimous decision victory over Brad Jenson and 2000 Olympic Silver Medallist Ricardo Rocky Juarez patiently outpointed Pascali Adorno in his pro debut. Also looking impressive in his first pro fight, 2000 Mexican Olympian Francisco "Panchito" Bojado posted a second round KO over Detrick Castor. The fight card was promoted by Main Events Inc.
Judah (26-0, 1 NC, 20 KOs), of Brooklyn, New York turned in an underwhelming nine rounds of boxing before devastating Green (33-5, 16 KOs), of Tuxedo, Maryland with a powerful left hand in the 10th round that rocked the challenger. The left set up a vicious combination that nearly knocked Green out of the ring. Though Green was able to beat the count, Judah charged him, landing a powerful right hand that knocked Green to the canvas and forced referee Arthur Mercante Sr. to stop the bout at 1:29 of the 10th round.
Diaz (7-0, 5 KOs), of Houston, Texas fought a very durable Jenson (7-2, 4 KOs), of Denver, Colorado to a unanimous decision victory. Though Diaz was not able to drop Jenson, he did pitch a shutout on all three judges' scorecards. Judges John Lawson and Glen Feldman of Connecticut and Donald Ackerman of New York all scored the six-round bout 60-54.
Juarez (1-0, 0 KOs), of Houston, Texas looked polished in his pro debut, scoring a unanimous decision victory over tough southpaw Adorno (2-1, 0 KOs), of Morovis, Puerto Rico. Juarez was busy in all four rounds consistently attacking the body of Adorno. Judges Harold Gomes of Rhode Island and Melvina Lathan of New York scored the bout 40-36, while Judge Frank Lombardi of Connecticut scored the bout 39-37 all in favor of Juarez.
Bojado (1-0, 1 KO), of Guadalajara, Mexico looked tentative in his first professional round until he landed a straight right that dropped Castor (0-1-1, 0 KOs), of West Monroe, Louisiana to the canvas. Bojado came out with confidence in the second round and landed a left-right combination to the jaw of Castor sending the challenger staggering into the corner where Bojado impressively finished him off at 1:38 of the round.
A disappointed Jeff Lacy, member of the 2000 US Olympic team, was left on the sidelines tonight when his opponent, Kevin Butts claimed he did not want to fight and left the state. Promoter Main Events attempted to secure another opponent for Lacy's pro debut, but were unable to clear the fighter medically in time for the fight.
SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING's Steve Albert and former world champion Bobby Czyz called the action from ringside while Tim Smith served as roving reporter. The executive producer of the Showtime telecast was Jay Larkin with David Dinkins, Jr. producing and Bob Dunphy directing.
