BOXING: Jones Again To Face A Noboby
Once again, Roy Jones Jr. has chosen to fight against an opponent that nobody has heard of -- Derrick Harman.
Once again, Roy Jones Jr. has chosen to fight against an opponent that nobody has heard of in Derrick Harman.
Jones has complained at the lack of quality opponents available and said recently, "I will fight anyone and the best fighters this year."
However, one fighter that he refuses to meet is Welshman Joe Calzaghe, the undefeated WBO World Super-Middleweight champion.
Unlike Jones, Calzaghe wants to prove that he is the best pound-for-pound fighter in the World, "I see that Jones is fighting another unheard of opponent. The difference between me and him is that I want to fight the best out there and not just 'opponents'. Whereas Jones is content facing mediocre class opponents, I have fought the best and most dangerous fighters out there including Eubank, Sheika and Woodhall, all live fighters. I am offering Jones the opportunity to prove himself and fight me. He's losing respect in his own country, but I am offering Jones the opportunity to get some of that back by facing me. It's up to him."
Promoter Frank Warren said, "It's a great shame that Jones has not taken up Calzaghe's challenge. It's a fight that the World would want to see, the best against the best. Now that Jones has signed with HBO maybe he can ask for a one fight get out clause to make this fantastic fight."
