Troy Aikman -- Is he "Fish" bait?
It is rumored that former Dallas Cowboy quarterback Troy Aikman is being wooed by the Miami Dolphins. The question is: should Aikman consider returning to the NFL.
It is rumored that former Dallas Cowboy quarterback Troy Aikman is being wooed by the Miami Dolphins. This after Aikman publicly stated that he would only consider coming back if he could play for Norv Turner.
Turner may very well be the next head coach at San Diego, and if so, Aikman could get his wish, but he should be careful what he wishes for.
San Diego already has a proven veteran quarterback in Doug Flutie and a ready-in-the-wings quarterback in Drew Brees, who in limited play this season looked like he had a good handle on the offensive scheme.
So could Aikman think better of this situation and consider going to the Dolphins?
Dave Wannstedt says that he is extremely happy with the progress that Jay Feidler made this season and would not speculate on Aikman's future with the club.
"He's retired. It's a hypothetical question," joked Wannstedt when asked about whether or not he would like to have Aikman play for him.
With Aikman's health, such as it is, I don't foresee many teams making a huge investment in him. His ten concussions alone make him a liability right out of the box.
Personally, I see Aikman with a clipboard and a coaching title making a difference on some lifeless offense. A few teams come to mind right away -- Detroit, Cincinnati, and Cleveland.
There comes a time in every man's life when you must accept that you're not a kid anymore. Because of this and his injuries, Aikman is, plain and simple, no longer a viable option at quarterback in the NFL.
I wish Aikman luck in whatever he decides to do next season and if he does sign with someone, well, I wish them more.
