Redskins fire Schottenheimer, hire Spurrier

Marty Schottenheimer was fired Sunday night by Washington Redskins' owner Daniel Snyder, who is close to an agreement with Steve Spurrier to take over as head coach.
Marty Schottenheimer was fired Sunday night by Washington Redskins' owner Daniel Snyder after going 8-8 in his first and only season as head coach.

The Redskins then hired former Florida coach, Steve Spurrier, on Monday to replace Schottenheimer as Redskins head coach.

Schottenheimer took the Redskins to an 8-8 finish after starting out the season at 0-5, amidst team turmoil surrounding his treatment of veteran players.

Schottenheimer was done in by his insistence on keeping total control of personnel decisions and Snyder's obsession to have Spurrier as his head coach.

Spurrier signed with the Redskins and became the highest paid coach in the NFL, agreeing to a five-year, 25-million dollar deal to take over the team. With the signing, this concludes Snyder's two year quest to bring Spurrier to the Redskins.

Snyder also is looking to hire a general manager and has talked to such people as Bobby Beathard and Rich McKay about taking the position.

The coaching change will make it three different coachs in three years under the ownership of Snyder.
