Doctors treating Ariel Sharon are concerned that the Israeli prime minister has failed to show signs of emerging from a coma, despite being taken off anaesthesia.
Israeli army radio quoted officials as saying his failure to emerge from the induced coma was a bad sign. Hadassah hospital, which continued to describe Mr Sharon's condition as critical but stable, declined to discuss the reports.
However, doctors acknowledge that the longer it takes for the 77-year-old prime minister to emerge from the coma, if at all, the greater the likelihood of serious brain damage.
