Andrew Strauss stroked a beautiful 147 as England reached 263 for 4 on the first day in Johannesburg.
Strauss, who made his fifth century in 11 Tests, added 182 for the second wicket with Rob Key, who biffed 83.
Key's dismissal, driving loosely at Makhaya Ntini, sparked a minor collapse from 227 for 1. Strauss wafted wearily at the second new ball to give Shaun Pollock his first wicket, and Graham Thorpe, surprised by some extra bounce, popped Ntini to third slip before he had scored.
With Michael Vaughan struggling desperately to find his rhythm, England were reeling when bad light brought an early close.
Full report to follow.
