Pregnancy and Travel
Though traveling during pregnancy is not a problem but you have to take lots of precautions.
Precautions to be taken if you are traveling abroad:
* Find out as much as you can about the medical services in the country you wish to travel.
* Try to avoid an area where you could catch Malaria. If you really have to travel to a Malaria area, check and discuss it with your doctor.
* Try to avoid traveling to countries which require vaccinations, but if you have to go discuss it with your doctor. Some vaccinations are not recommended at certain stages of pregnancy.
* Always discuss your travel plans with your doctor.
* Make sure you get the right type of medical insurance.
* Also check out water supplies and hygiene levels in the countries you plan to visit.
It is also advisable to carry your own pack of emergency medical supplies.
Flying during pregnancy
Different Airlines have different policies about pregnancy, so there's no universal cut off date but many are reluctant to carry women more than 32 weeks pregnant. However they might ask for a note from your doctor saying that you are fit to fly. Remember that your ticket agents won't ask if you're pregnant when you book the flight tickets. Hence it's up to you to tell them, so check at that stage what the policy of the airline is regarding pregnancy.
Tips that will help you while traveling during pregnancy
* Wear loose and comfortable clothes when traveling.
* Don't drink alcohol while traveling.
* Eat small light meals when traveling; bring some snacks along with you.
* Follow all the usual precautions which you would take at home.
* When you're traveling by car include regular breaks to give yourself a chance to stretch your legs. Take car breaks every two hours and talk a small walk.
* Make sure your seat belt fits properly; the top strap should go between your breasts and the lower strap under your hips.
* Use a cushion as a support for your back while driving.
