Defending champion Jennifer Capriati was bundled out of the Australian Open after a shock 2-6, 7-6, 6-4 loss to Marlene Weingartner.

The twice Australian Open champion blew her chance of a hat-trick of titles when she crashed to an unexpected loss after looking to have the match under control.

The American raced through the opening set then opened up a 4-2 lead in the second when her game suddenly fell apart with a series of uncharacteristic mistakes.

Her serve started to desert and she missed a string of ground strokes at vital times to let the German back in the match.

Weingartner, ranked 90th in the world, captured the second set in a tiebreaker then snatched victory when she broke Capriati's serve on her first match point.
