A minister in Silvio Berlusconi's government could be put on trial after being accused of taking secret funding for his party from the company involved in Europe's biggest corporate fraud.

The agriculture minister, Gianni Alemanno, of the National Alliance party, said yesterday he was renouncing parliamentary immunity to answer the charges.

Prosecutors claim he accepted €85,000 (£58,000) from Calisto Tanzi, the disgraced head of the Parmalat dairy empire, for helping to get a product to market. It was withdrawn from sale after protests that it had been misleadingly marketed.
