CBS Staff Fired Over Bush Claims

CBS television announced yesterday that four of its staff had been fired for their roles in producing a controversial report alleging that President Bush had used family influence to avoid National Guard service during the Vietnam war.

The station acted in response to an independent report which said it had been driven by a "myopic zeal" to break the story.

The report, broadcast on the influential 60 Minutes programme, came at the height of the presidential election campaign.

After initially defending the report the programme's anchor, Dan Rather, announced that he was stepping down.

The four staff who were sacked were three of the station's news executives and the producer of the report, Mary Mapes.
