New Year's resolution for the Detroit Lions -- Lose Weight
The Lions need to do something to the team before they move into the new staduim next year. Getting rid of Matt Millen and Marty Mornhinweg would be a good start.
As many of us look at a New Year, we start to think of things we can do better.
Some of us decide we need to take control of our finances or work less at out jobs and spend more time with the family, but most resolutions that are talked about involve losing weight.
The Detroit Lions are one of those organizations who need to lose weight, probably about 500 to 600 pounds. But, the Lions could lose that weight in much less time than it would take us to lose five pounds.
By firing Matt Millen and Marty Mornhinweg, the Lions could take off those pounds and give their fans something to cheer about at the start of the year 2002.
Let's face it, the Lions are a joke. Jay Leno has made a living this NFL season making fun of the team.
The players have no intensity whatsoever and the coaches never seem to have the right game plan. Winning one game for them was such a momentous event that players were whooping it up and coaches were getting Gatorade showers, while upper management were hugging and kissing each other in their luxury box.
All in all, the season has been a total waste of time for the fans, and a total waste of money for the Ford family who own this sad excuse for a NFL team.
Sure, there were some bright spots, or should I say dim specks of light, in this season.
Ten of the fifteen games have been close, but, even some of those games became close after the opposing team let up because of a big lead.
However, after watching the last two games, the Lions turned into their usual selves -- losers -- as they were blown out at Pittsburgh by 33 points and were shut out by the Bears in Pontiac by 24 points.
Mike McMahon was a breath of fresh air taking over for Charlie Batch in the quarterback position. His strong arm and running ability were something the Lions needed at that position for the last several years.
Of course, after only two starts, McMahon was hurt and could not even play in the Bear's game.
Millen and Mornhinweg have turned a 9-7 team that just missed the playoffs into a 1-14, maybe 1-15, team that people make jokes about.
The M&M boys traded a fourth round pick for a third string quarterback in Ty Detmer.
Millen's first two draft picks were offensive lineman, even though they needed some impact players on offense and especially in the defensive backfield.
The Lions rarely seem prepared to start a game or even have a game plan that will win them the game.
The penalties they commit seem to come at all the wrong times and all the wrong places on the field. In fact, the Lions are one of the top, if not the top, team in penalty yards against them. Obviously, the team lacks discipline.
Combine their lack of intensity and discipline with the poor coaching, and you get the pitiful Detroit Lions.
Next year, the Lions will be playing in Ford Field. With a new field, a new Detroit Lions team should move in.
The Ford's can do all the Lion fans a favor by admitting their hiring of the M&M boys was a mistake, and fire them ASAP after the season and go after a real coach.
Bill Parcells is out their with Super Bowl experience and success wherever he has gone. Just open the pocketbook, Bill, and get him.
Either way, the Lions need to get losing out of their system. Lions' fans need a new attitude with the new year.
