I agree with Erin. TV, while it may be a contributing factor, is not the sole source of childhood obesity. Children's choices are often influenced by what they see their parents do. If a parent lacks the self-discipline to eat right and exercise, the child will likely do the same. Thus a main cause of obesity is lack of self-discipline and poor parental modeling. Sometimes the fault lies with other contributing factors such as heredity; the fault is not entirely the parents'. However, they can still help by being a good role model. Parents should model healthy lifestyle choices such as diet and exercise for their kids and include their children in the activities. |

The lack of both self-control and relational involvement causes childhood obesity, not television and fast food. In today’s society, children are left alone I the home too frequently. As a child, one learns to rely on his/her parents immediately following birth and thus cannot be expected to live independently with self-discipline. If the parent is hardly around, how is the child to learn what choices are right – regarding health, for example? Therefore, a child left alone and without self-discipline immediately searches for comfort in what they find familiar: eating and entertainment (television and video games in today’s society). Though television may communicate negative images and fast food may not be full of nutrition, they are not the central culprit for childhood discipline. Especially when providing convenience and comfort, television and junk food seems welcoming. No, our children should be filled with the knowledge of how to maintain self-control and create relationships. Yet, neither can be done without the parent’s frequent involvement. |

Fantastic! I agree. I've "pulled the plug" on the tv for myself as well. I've been on a media fast for the past 3 years.... and guess what... I love it! I rent DVDs and watch more "quality" television when I chose to.
I must say that the best thing for me was not watching the horror news every night before bed and every morning when I wake up! What a way to live - with the horror and terror of the news... there's never anything good on there anyway... Negativity sells and it's about ratings.
Instead my husband and I wake up to our 2 little boys playing in our bed... and we go to bed with positive personal development DVDs or great books on personal improvement... none of that negative drama crap... My kids don't watch tv either... we actually cancelled the cable tv portion of our cable (kept the internet) and it's awesome... we play, color, read, go places and all the fun things that watching tv takes kids away from. It also helps that we've made the decision to both work from home in a home business almost 4 years ago... that allows us to actually have the time to be with our children and be the PRIMARY influence in their lives instead of the strangers in daycare raising them... should you want to go that route, contact me directly for further information.

It's interesting to note several studies that showed watching excessive violence on TV did not make the viewers more violent BUT...
Watching all that TV did give them "mean world syndrome".
Put simply most people, including children, who watch a lot of TV think the world is a lot more dangerous than it really is.
So instead of going outside in the "mean, dangerous world" they stay inside and...watch TV!
Get outside and play with your kids.
Screw the TV set. |

play outside with your children, too much tv is bad for children anyway, regardless of the obesity thing. |

children dont have to be watching tv just because they are indoors. play games with your chioldren bake cakes etc. and if people think its too dangerous for them to go out alone, go with them, my little girl is six too young to go out alone, but we spend a lot of time in the park. |

Recent poster issued by French Police:the total number of missing children in France for last 10 years: 15 faces. Not 400,000 missing kids per year,15 in 10 years.Either America is a more dangerous place than France or some tabloid TV stations here have some financial interest in scaring families. |

Why are parents not simply sending their children out to play? because tabloid TV is based on a terror campaign to fabricate or exagerrate dangers to children.THe reason they do this is because if you dangle some news item about child abduction in front of TV viewers, they will sit through endless commercials. |

I know whhat causes childhood obesity in the US.I have been studying this problem for 20 years. The absolute test case is what has happened in Ipanema Brazil.Up until 5 years ago, there had never been a fat person on the beaches of Rio. THen came 50 channels of tabloid TV,20 pizza joints, and 10 hamburger places. Tablod TV scares children into staying home, directly advertises fast food or confort food.Today the kids in Ipanema are fat, even by US standards. |

I like your style. However, I thought the study assigned the 167 cal/hr as the total net gain for each hour of TV, not simply that they consumed that much. Parents, send your kids outside to play instead! They are healthier and happier. |
