Mary Cochran A lot of good advice here. I was on meds for years to alleviate my panic and anxiety but then a friend gave me a book on CBT called Been There, Done That? DO THIS! by Sam Obitz which had an exercise called the TEA form in it that helps you retrain your brain to think more objectively. I started doing them religiously as was suggested and in less than six months I was off all my anti-depression and anti-anxiety meds. That was two years ago and I'm still doing great so I think for lasting relief CBT is an excellent choice. 1/29/2008
foxysgal I have had anxiety for 17 years.I always feel like Im having a heart attack, burning in the left side of my chest, left shoulder and down my left are. Had EKGs,DR.gets mad at me and says its all anxiety,i live in small town he is the only Dr. and he has made me afraid to go to him,for anything, because I know he is going to yell at me. Im on Xanax for the anxiety, buts its not working like it used to.Can anxiety cause all these burning sensations? 9/24/2006
Christine Smith NAMI member here. Panic attacks are mostly not externally triggered and are due to faulty brain chemistry. They are not trauma-based and can happen at any time with or without external stimuli. Suffers can learn to identify when they are having this problem and need to take prescribed medication. 7/13/2006
