Why do We Celebrate Birthdays

Why do we celebrate birthdays? What is it that we are toasting? Is it the fact that we have survived another year against many odds? Are we marking the progress we have made, our cumulative achievements and possessions? Is a birthday the expression of hope sprung eternal to live another year?

Kattie Sorry, I don't agree with this at all. I don't think that I am going to live forever. I think of my birthday as a day that is centered around me. I am interested as to why you bring up the past and the future but not once did you mention the present. Maybe we also celebrate to connect past, present and future together. 10/12/2006

Sammy i think this website tells a bit, but im an 11 yr old kid, and i'm doing a speech on why we celebrate birthdays, it is a little odd i think, but this website tells me quite a bit about why we celebrate birthdays.
