Heartworms are caused by Dirofilaria immitis. While this is parasitic roundworm. When talking about dogs and cats, the term roundworm is generally used for Toxocara. It might be helpful to reference roundworm as a general category that many parasites fall into such as heartworms and Toxocara.		 10/31/2007
