Mermaids, Fantasy and Art

So what happens as we grow older and those feelings of pretend and fantasy become dull? We find ourselves wondering what took away that spirit of optimism and adventure. When did paper toys appear only as paper, no longer something that fairies and mermaids and dragons became alive in? Does it matter?

Tammy Pierce I am an artist! Of course I "couldn't draw a thing" when I was a kid. My brother could draw realistic stuff so, by comparison, I thought I must have no talent and never took an art class. Boy did I doodle, though! I taught myself 3-D letters, balloon letters, etc. I became a chemist, then a chemistry teacher, gradually realizing that I wanted every project I assigned to my students to look "like a girl did it"! My daughter finally could hold a crayon and speak and said she wanted to be an artist!! My other daughter eventually asked me to draw (of all things) a baby on a skateboard! How could I say no! To her it was a masterpiece! They started asking me how I learned to draw so "good"! I realized that they could be quenched or allowed to flourish at that point! I told them that I never thought I could draw but thanks to them I was finding out that not being afraid to try was the most important thing. Then something remarkable happened. I figured out that I could draw. I don't draw realistically (maybe only because I haven't been trained, don't have the patience, or the desire) but I can draw really cool stuff. I now have a business making personalized signs and amaze myself when I tell people that I will paint whatever they want. Sometimes its scary but my little girls see that I'm willing to try - plus I get my 10 year old to help if I'm stuck!! :) And you know what else? Art is so much more than drawing, painting, and sculpting. There is so much design and other media out there so even if they don't show what we consider talent at drawing, painting, or sculpting, who's to say that some form of design or other media isn't waiting for them to explode onto the scene. We just have to give them the opportunities to get far enough to discover the possibilities!!

Just so you know - I found your article because I googled "how to draw a mermaid". I know I can draw one but thought I'd see what help I could get. Just because I'm an artist doesn't mean I can't get help (as some people seem to think)! Thank you for your encouragement both for me and for me to remember that every creation of my children's is their art and I need to respect it as such because they will cherish those memories later!
Thank you!
