Memory Foam Mattress vs. Coil Spring Mattress; How Do They Differ?

Coil springs are fine for pogo sticks, cars and holding your flashlight batteries in place, but sleeping on them?...Why not a bed of nails instead? Make your own decision, but at least take a couple of minutes to learn about this archaic, tortuous mattress material before you decide.

Tyler Foam mattresses don't breathe. They feel nice for the first couple of minutes - but then the moisture and heat start to build up, you feel hot and sticky, so you toss and turn all night. Unfortunately this flaw doesn't become apparent until you've already bought the mattress and are trying to sleep, especially in summer.

Coil mattresses are padded with a soft absorbent liner that not only smooths out the bumps of the coils, but allows the perspiration and heat from your body to dissipate freely through the mattress and out the box below. To do that, the mattress needs big open pockets of free-flowing air.

Well then, why not sleep on an air mattress right? Actually air mattresses ARE very cool, but unfortunately they don't breathe, so the moisture stays trapped.

And waterbeds? - Great support, fantastic heat dissipation, but once again, they don't breathe. They are nice and cool but they get damp.

I've slept on all of the above. They all provide good support, but a coil mattress is the only one that stays cool and dry.

Stephen This is a nice article, but I'd definitely say that it is biased toward foam mattresses. I don't think that the decision is as clear cut as the author is making it seem. Personal experience is no substitute. 5/12/2008
