Definition of a Sports Cars

The term sports car has varying perceptions. Road and Track said it best "Ask five people the exact definition of a sports car, and you’ll likely get five different answers".

foxy Wow, thanks for failing to define sports car. Sports car definition is simple... RWD, 2 or less seats, light weight, high horsepower (relative to said weight). A performance car on the other hand can be anything, but a sports car is quite a distinct thing. 10/7/2009
James Heath We already have terms that fit the cars that are performance oriented yet do not fit the true definition of a sports car. A sports car should seat 2, and be a small lightweight car. It is more about handling than raw horsepower in many instances. It may or may not necessarily be overly powerful but due to being lightweight will probably have a good power to weight ratio. Many performance cars that do not fit this definition may qualify as other things such as Muscle Car, Pony Car, Super Car, maybe even Hot Rod. I have noticed lately that in addition to improper use of the word sports car people have been refering to some pony cars as muscle cars. If it does not have a big block, it is not a muscle car. It does not matter how fast it is. It does not fit the definition.
Yes, I know I tend to be very opinionated I have heard that before. Thanks for reminding me of these words though as I may add a chapter about them in the book I am currently writing about the history of words.
