Caryl You describe Sophie, my 17-year-old, white, blue-eyed genetically deaf cat. I have a box located against my bed that works as a step. And I have a dual-control electric blanket, which I have turned on for her side of the bed 24 hours a day during cold weather. She then has the option of laying on the heated blanket or on my side of the bed, and there's no question that she likes the heat. In the past I used heating pads, and all the older cats used to quietly compete for them. Sophie is the only one I have left. I have noticed that her coat is a bit oily, scruffy, and think I'll have to try the weekly bath bit. Hope she doesn't mind too much. She used to like to play with water, especially garden hoses and sprinklers. She's always hungry, but hasn't put the weight back on that she lost with bladder infection and bad teeth that had to be removed. Her time is coming, but I'll do what I can until then. I'm feeding her one of those small cans of food a day--not the stuff in gravy that turns to rubber after she's licked up the gravy--giving her a tablespoonful at a time throughout the day as she won't eat anything dried out (she thinks anytime I'm at the computer is feeding time). She does eat her Science Diet dry food for elderly cats which is always available. 7/16/2008
Lufia Brian,
It was nice to read about your elderly cats. I have two that turned 16 this year. I was able to relate to everything you wrote. I just ordered the stairs to h elp them get on the bed (good idea). It felt good to read about someone elses experience. Thank you for the article.

Kitty Thanks! My nearest & dearest friend is now 14 1/2, and I recognize some of the things you mentioned in him.

It's good to think that we're allowed to spoil our loves a little, without the guilt.
