J in Chicago At the age of 43, I have now lived with diagnosed adult ADD for 6 years. I'd like to comment on your article.

In your first paragraph you wrote, "A person with ADD, however, has no problems perceiving or interpreting information." Sarah, you're wrong. Problems with the perception and interpretation of information is at the heart of what ADD is all about.

I can sit in a board room and physically hear everything said. However, the incoming verbal information backs up in my brain and becomes jumbled together with everything else going on that day. In short, I hear them, it just doesn't register. I can't finish detailed thoughts and projects and I often stop before projects are finished. I "know" what needs to be done, it just doesn't get done.

I respectfully recommend you modify your description.

tasha i just wanted to let you know that you might want to reword the first two paragraphs of this artical on "is ADD a learning dissability."
i have lived my whole live with add diagnosed but not treated until a few weeks ago. i am now 25. the way you word the first two paragraphs makes it sound like the distraction, disorganization, memory spottymess, and impulsiveniess are volentary and can becontroled if the child just "buckles down and tries harder to focus" when this is not the case at all. i was angry and frustrated, believing that you didnt understand the "attention inconsistancy disorder" at all, untill i read your thoughts on ADD in adults. See? even my spelling ability is affected by ADD. the fast memory recall needed to consistently spell the same word the same way every time plus the interest and atention span to learn and memorize new words is lost on people like me. simple every day things like rememboring a dead line at work or retreving the company mail as part of your job or the entire sequence of closing or opening procedure may be lost with a simple setting of the alarm or turning off of the hot dog machine.within forgeting the simple things the job may be lost. and frequently. social cues like the pursing of lips or tone fluctuation, or eventhe raising of eye brows, or maybe a subtle sigh are not taken in. from guaging the reaction of another person to the words you say to how you say them, or the sequence yoy say them in, even restraining a thought that comes to mind long enough to filter and judge tack or how it will affect the person you are talking to. if these are not learning disabilities that cause social isolation, a true disability than i dont know what you would call it. in order to servive in this todays working world you have to be able to work within a set structure, convay your skills to other people verbaly or written, preform work consistentley and on time and in the proper sequence, be on time to work and remember what you need to do when you need to do it. could this inability to function that way the rest of the world requires you to not be concidered a disability? your thoughts yould be verry much apreciated. thank you. tasha
