Is Bariatric Surgery The Answer To Obesity?

Against a background of widespread obesity among all US age-groups, and the relative failure of conventional weight loss methods, doctors are increasingly resorting to bariatric surgery in order to curb the rise of weight-related disease, and associated costs. But does this type of gastric surgery work, and what are the health risks?

ANTONYA i havec had bariatric surgery and i am 31 days out, this is definately a surgery that has to be thought out thoroughly. i am happy that i have had the surgery and i had a wonderfull sergion. the only thing that i difficult to me is having what is called dumping syndrome. its not fun cause i am now haveing real food not lots only chicken salad and boy, iam not sure that eating this is the right thing. but for the most part it is good , you just have to be careful and make sure that you follow all of the guidelines. 7/31/2008
rob i have a girlfriend who has a bmi of 50, at age forty, meanwhile I have a BMI of 21, that is half my age of 42. I am currently on a diet with the aim of maybe getting a minimalist BMI of 18, a task I may well accomplish with little more than dropping booze and soda. 9/1/2007
annette i had the stomach staple in 1979 i have my 33 hernia...More research should have been done before the surgery was approved my health is failing 8/21/2006
brenda I am a type 1 diabetic and gain weight even when i don't eat and i't effecting my heath and me overall. I've asked my doctor over and over what i could do she said it was because of my insulin and now today she said i was fat and needed to do something . I don't eat alot. would this help? 5/25/2006
Dave 5 years out from a bypass and switch. Malabsorption of iron is a problem. Many infections and over all health is not good. I am trying to take vitamins in liquid format to help. I have a hemotologist, immunologist and internist but I think it is a simple thing since they can't find any thing bad. Any place in the Detroit area that can help me. 5/14/2006
