Be Careful of Fake Paypal Emails

Making online payments is quite convenient and common nowadays. However, you have to be careful of not giving away your account and credit card details. There are hackers out there waiting to prey on people with email addresses.

Debbie My stepdaugher just lost a $1,100 camera. She setup a real PayPal account for selling her camera on Kijiji. Next she was contacted by "Peggy" who wanted to buy the camera for her sister in Nigeria. Right there her Dad said "Don't do it".. Then she contacted "Peggy" with her PayPal account number to say that it was setup... Within a short period of time, she received an email from PayPal indicating that the payment was received and that it would be crediting her account when they received confirmation that the camera had been shipped... Nicole didn't check her PayPal account she just went by the email and shipped the camera. We thought she was shipping it to the sister here.. nope.. right to Nigeria. About 4 days later she received another email from PayPal (with all the proper logo's, security warnings, etc. indicating that there was a problem - Peggy had overpaid by $1,100 and they wouldn't show the transaction as Pending until she provided a receipt from Western Union that the extra money had been sent to... you guessed it.. Nigeria. It was at this point she called me. She was adament that all the emails came directly from PayPal - they were fairly convincing... but the contact address was service at paypal com (trackingteam at email com) I sent the email to spoof at PayPal and they confirmed it. We are trying to stop the shipment... but who knows. On the way with all the emails to the RCMP.. Ah, Life Lessons... poor kid 4/23/2009
auguatine i think dis is timely.dis kind of information needs to get to more pple cos its so sad dat u get scammed of one's hard earned money.another scam going on is now on matchmakers site,where pple looking for love are scammed of their money.how can more pple learn to protect themselves from such scammers? 9/10/2008
Suray I've experienced the similar problem and I've posted with title "Fake PayPal Email: Be Aware of Fake PayPal Sites". Moreover, I've reported the site to PayPal's official site. Be careful if you are dealing with Fake PayPal Email. 8/24/2008
