SURREALISTIC PILLOW: The West Virginia Mining Disaster

The Sago coalmine disaster was riveting drama. It was not, however, worthy of three days of full-time coverage. To deliver the news in this manner is a disservice to all Americans, including the exploited families of the miners themselves. The greater tragedy is that it has become the standard of modern journalism.

Bill Simon Jack Random's comments must be attributed to his name, because he sure likes to be random regarding his writing. What I mean is that his thoughts are just that, random thoughts. Not much substance to what he says. I guess he forgets that whatever information the media gets from anyone that wants to be our so called representative is information that will be sanitized by those individuals and their interests. On the subject of the coal mine disaster, he has insulted the intelligence of a lot of people by undermining the very core of human feelings. People need to be able to see grief to be reminded that our neighbours are human beings with feelings. Without that, we are more apt to go on with our lives without compassion. If we can see our neighbours as human, then we are going to see our neighbour nations as human and perhaps we will have second thoughts about waging war against them. He also forgets that the media stories brought out information on an industry that requires more reforms and in that respect it sparks the interest of people to look more closely at other major industries around them that may require more scruitny.
I think that Jack needs to go to the families of the coal mine disaster and personally apologize for his comments regarding them as being not worthy of three days of media broadcasts. I also believe that the media coverage and copies of the tapes and newspapers will be a base of some comfort for the families who are affected. It will provide something else for them to hold on to, memories of the lost ones.
