Should You Relax or Perm?

Not everyone is blessed with hair that falls perfectly into place. Some need to coach their hair a little to get the look they want and others fight a never-winning battle when it comes to taming their tresses. In order to help in this battle, many turn to chemical relaxers and perms to make their job easier. Should you?

Nicky Learn about natural black hair before you judge it. This is just as bad as a discussion about how lighter skin colors are better than darker ones, just uneducated. If you are indeed black yourself, you should be ashamed, I might aspect this kind of mentally with others but its doubly offense when we do this ourselves. 5/19/2006
Proud Afrobabe I disagree "Ethnic hair" does not need a perm/relaxer. There are many natural styles that can show ones length without damaging the hair which happens with a perm/relaxer or heat. Twists/canerows/braids/braid or twistouts/locs etc all can showcase the real length of someone with ethnic hair which may appear shorter due to the tight curl/coil pattern. 5/16/2006
Happily Nappy Please remove this article from your site. It is so offensive and filled with misinformation about caring for nappy hair. There are many people with nappy hair that also feel blessed. I'm one of them. This article only promotes negative feelings toward and about nappy hair. 5/16/2006
Khalilah D. You can't be serious. Putting harsh chemicals on your hair to make it straight is not a good idea, nor is it necessary. All you have to do is learn how to take care of your hair in its natural state, which is different from how other people take care of their hair. I wear my hair without any heat or chemicals, and not only is it manageable, but it takes less time, effort, and money than it ever did when I used a relaxer, and it looks FABULOUS!! It is also longer than it was when I was getting a relaxer. Jenny, you need to do your homework. 4/16/2006
Felicia H My hair is natural and nappy for a whole year now and I am not experiencing trouble styling it. I find that my hair is very versatile and can be styled in many ways. I just had to learn the best ways and best tools to use on my hair. I think that putting awful chemicals in my hair to obtain a straight look is worse than needing a different kind of comb or combing when wet. Black people just need to be taught the right way to take care of their nappy hair instead of trying to use products and tools that were not meant for black hair. 4/16/2006
