Milk Goats - Know Thy Enemy

Patience may be a virtue, but laughter is the only way to survive newbie goat milking. Use this journal to draw hope. There is light at the end of the nipple.

Lorrie I've just been through the same exact scenario with my French Alpine dairy goat. As I read your account I laughed so hard, my eyes teared up. 5/18/2009
Joyce Armstrong TRUE...SAD BUT TRUE! 4/29/2009
Nola Lee Kelsey You all are the best. I get my laugh by reading comments from other who can relate to my story. Thank you and happy milking! 12/1/2008
Max Oh my gosh, I am laughing SO hard! Husband and I just got doelings in June to add milk to OUR backyard fram in Spring. Perhaps I will re-evaluate my expecatations for the first year... 10/4/2008
Ray sad story. but you actually got to be in the same county as your goat. mine was brown, or tan or something. 7/20/2008
Denise oh my gosh! I just got my 2 goats yesterday evening and did my first milking this morning with tears, frustration, goat kicking and knocking the bucket of only 1/2 oz of milk. I couldn't believe how the story is exactly like mine. I so hope it only takes a week to master this and not as long as the story. I will survive and win this because I am determined to do this without fail. Great story. I should have videotaped my first time. I'm sure it would be a great laugh in a month or hopefully less than that! 5/19/2008

Amber Johnson This was beautifully written!! I applaud the writer- and the saint within. My husband, kids and I are considering getting milking goats- good to read everything we can find so we do not romance this experience. I'll be sure to milk the goat far from earshot of the kids for the first month or so! lol Loved this-- kudos! 11/5/2007
Dana I think your daily journal is a great LOL but oh how true I know it is. I started milking for my first time about 150 goats whom were misstreated by the last farmer's employee, not bad but just enough so that it took me about a month to get the heard to be fun to work with at all!!! I think sometimes at that place the bad times out weighed the good but, it was a good learning experience and know I've started my own little goat dairy and oh what fun it is! 9/9/2007
Karen That is absolutely hilarious and Oh so true! I just got my first Nubian and her 3 day old twins. Once we got them settled I started ATTEMPTING to milk her- now 6 weeks later she only gets her foot in the bucket once every 7-10 days. However I still have to catch her and drag her onto the milkstand twice a day as she digs all four feet into the ground and tries her darndest to escape. Stubborn Thing!! 6/10/2007
Donna What a crack up, mmm so this is what I have to look forward to, maybe I should stick my husbands coffee cup under my does teat before my own cup. 5/22/2006
