and one long reason to add would be: 'cos Dora speaks it and my daughter loves Dora and would be a good one to 'practise/teach' it as we go along and to hatch a 'surprise' for wife/mom with the help of your kid

Dan Breeden I agree with Steve. Too many Americans have an island mentality. Studying a foreign language can break one out of the "one world" way of thinking. Spanish is the easiest and most practical language for Americans. I learned both Spanish and French. The Spanish gave me better access to a very large group of very warm and friendly people. The French gave me marginal access to a group of people who wan't to break up their union because the English speaking provinces won't acknowledge their inate superiority.
Accross the pond, the French are livid about being marginalized by the English speaking world. They take it out on everybody [when they aren't out on strike]
