Stephen H. I am a teacher and I think RED PEN editing RULES. As for wimps who whinge about red pen edits being "too harsh" or "too negative" I say GO F&CK YOURSELVES. Do you want to baby your children so much they aren't able to deal with the real world once they graduate? Also: for me the most important reason to use red ink when grading papers is that it STANDS OUT on the page...whereas blue, purple, or green ink blend in to the student's writing...and most importantly when I'm counting up mistakes on the test I'm grading RED STANDS OUT--to make grading 40 PAPERS easier. THINK ABOUT IT. I wish...I dream of a day when articles like this one actually cover all the implications--albeit them fairly superficial...but of course this remains just a dream--while misinformation and stupidity remain the norm. 3/27/2009

Mom & counselor I think we are giving our children just another excuse in life. Red ink, purple ink, does it really matter? Comments and criticisms are just that. Parents are so worried about their childrens psyche that they are failing to look at what they are doing to their ability to cope. It is another way of putting a shield around their children so they don't get a scratch. The reality of it is some day they won't have a choice and at that point will they know how do deal will disappointment or rejection? 6/8/2006
Susie If todays parents can't cope with the color red then they shouldn't be parents. It's a color for pete's sake!! There's nothing wrong with red for correcting, would they rather have the teachers use bright pink or yellow instead? It's rediculous!!!! 4/13/2006
rick Its Just a color! 2/23/2006
James This is not a good idea. If you over-protect children while they are in school and they never hear any criticism they will not know how to handle the real world. When they graduate high school, their bosses aren't going to put up with whatever they want to do. If today's kids can't handle a little red ink, we're in big trouble for the future 9/16/2005
William This is as absurd as it gets. Thanks "progressive" America! 7/20/2005
Melissa I am a teacher. This is the most ridiculous thing I have read in a while. How long will it take before the color purple is perceived as a "stress-inducing" color? Please! 5/21/2005
