parekhnileshp Hi Rani,
I do think the point you have put forward is correct ... mutation test is used to find out the thoroughness of the test sets and check if the test set can find out (discriminate) the error after you modify your code slightly.
I really guess my definition of mutation testing in the article depicted the same thing!

Thanks and regards for your valuable comments!
Nilesh Parekh

Rani Hi Nilesh

Mutation testing is used to test the quality of your test suite. This is done by mutating certain statements in your source code and checking if your test code is able to find the errors.... Pl feel free to correct me if i'm wrong....

vijay the article would have been even more good if it would have had some diagramatiical representation. 2/23/2007
Yogesh Bhadane Unit testing comes under black box testing which is done by a developer or a skilled tester.he/she wud check the out put at his end first before giving to the tester and not check the logic.white box testing is actually going through the logic i.e paths, branches , loops , statments.
eg. 2+2=4 developer wil chck for the ans 4 at his end and not how he coded to get the value as how did 4 come.

Please correct me.

parekhnileshp Hi Vikram,
Well ... if you could just re-visit your own definition ... you will find ... I was talking about the same definition .. just in broader term ....

Mutation testing ..... is to test a code after fixing which means ... checking response of an application after fixing in your words ...

Regression testing ... is to test the code unit or entire application under certain scenario for more times.

Hope I am not mistaking here. Please do let us know if we have anything wrong in our articles.

Thanks for your invaluable feedback.

Nilesh Parekh

Vikram Maratha HI Nilesh
U r writing about Mutation testing "A kind of testing in which, the application is tested for the code that was modified after fixing a particular bug/defect". i think this defination is for Regression testing when application are re tested after fixing a bug to find the adhere effect of that fixing on that application. In case of Mutation testing tester modify small code and test the application to find that how application reacted if this code changes. Please clarify this point.
1/1/2007
Rahul khattar The discussion on mutation testing does describe regression testing?

parekhnileshp Hi Mubbashir,
It is always possible to test a system for its security without knowing the internal logic. But that will not be a complete testing. Lets say that you do not know anything about the internals (ie. code logic) of the system ... so you tested the system as par your understanding ... but there may be some CODE LOOPHOLES which you have missed as you do not know anything about the code ... but for sure the code is vulnerable as it has a loophole ... and this can be used against it ...
Now take it this way ... if you know that internal logic of code ... then you can try and find out the problems/loopholes in the code and that will help you make your system more and more stable and secure!

Hope this helps.
10/4/2006
Mubbashir Hi
I am a little curious how Security Testing falls under white box testing, do we really need to have internal logic and structure of the code in order to test its security?
10/3/2006
sateesh very thks Nilesh garu 9/29/2006
parekhnileshp Hi Kumar Varma and Sateesh,
It will be a real nightmare for any tester to test a project or writing test cases without proper requirement understanding ... think about this ... you have been asked to search for something ... but you don't know what? This way you will go on thinking whatever you find is what actually you have been asked to search ..... may be that is not the actual treasure!
You surely can go ahead and test something without knowing project requirements ... but then it all will be a mess!

All I can suggest you is ... go for negative testing ... this way, its possible that you will be able to uncover software behaviour which logically is called a bug. But ... you also have to be very careful!

Hope this helps
