Why does a car engine overheat?

curtisnickle informative but i was more looking for details like if you cant get the system to take water and it steams is it a waterpump or thermostat. anyway it did help so thank you 12/18/2006
CINDY CAN A BATTERY STOP MY ENGINE FROM RUNNING AND OVER HEATING BECAUSE ONLY TWO LIGHTS COME ON THE OIL , AND BATTERY LIGHT BUT THE CAR WOULD RUN FOR TWENTY MINUTES THEN IT SHUTS OFF CAN YOU HELP? Rick Binder My honda del sol only get hot when my car is at a stop. Soon as my car moves the gauge goes back to normal. Both fans work , my radiator is full, and I dont see any water leaks around the hoses or on the ground. Can you help. Thanks 7/30/2006

Larry O. Ealom If I have put a new Radator new water pump a new theromastat new hoeses the fan is working could it be the cap in car is a 1995 Chevrolet Lumina 4 Door Car with a 3.1 9/28/2005
Erica This is great information! I was told that my airconditioning belt was the cause of my car overheating and a few other things you listed in this article and I do not run the aircondition in my car. Someone was trying to rip me off. 9/5/2005

Joseph My old 86 ford laser keeps overheating. You said 'If the radiator cap does not hold pressure correctly then coolant could boil and therefore the engine would overheat'. when my car overheats the coolant usually does boil. Do you think that it's most likely that there is a problam with the radiator cap or is it more likely to be something else.
