I live in Chatham County North Carolina, a county in central N.C. The history of the county in the 1700's and 1800's is comprised of the Hortons, and the Haughtons, along with the John London family, the latter extending primarily into the 1900's. George Moses Horton, the black bard of Chatham County was a slave and a poet in the county during roughly the first half of the 1800's. And he wrote much antislavery poetry until he moved northwards to Philadelphia after the Civil War. What is interesting about the above facts, is that Haughton is a variation of Houghton. And there could have been a relationship between the Hortons and Houghtons that extended back to England since Norman times. Shakespeare lived purportedly with the Lancashire Houghtons in his adolescence and had theater items left to him by Alexander Houghton in his will. In fact, Northampton county England along with Yorkshire and Lancashire have towns and properties that carry the Horton names along with the Houghton names. Furthermore the two named towns lie close to each other in these counties. This fact reveals the potential close relationship between the Houghtons and Hortons down through the previous centuries in medieval England. If the Hortons and Houghtons were indeed close families, that knew each other, the issue is how much influence would this relationship have on the phenomena of creating the poet George Moses Horton, since the Houghtons were well involved in theater, literature, relegion and the arts in Lancashire. Note, Cheshie and Lancashire counties were replete with artistic endeavors; an art community, and culture, extending from the middle ages existed in both these counties. I had an ancestor, William Horton, of Northampton County in the 1300's who went north into Cheshire County in the post plague years to marry a woman called Joan Dutton. Joan Dutton's parents were Edouard Dutton and Joan Minshull. The Minshulls were the same family line which John Milton's third wife, Minshull (I can't remember her first name) came from. The Duttons were Lords of the Ministrels, an interesting title stemming from some events dating back to King John's reign, in 1216. They built a minstrel hall on their properties and later, likewise, the Lancashire Houghtons built a minstrel hall on their properties also. This structure, inaugurated the artistic air of the Houghtons, an air most likely further embellished with a library, music and theatrics. An environment that William Shakeshaft of Stratford would later enter into in his youth in the 1570's. An article on the internet called "Amazing Bits of Houghton history" give a full account of major points of the Houghton history. In fact, my Horton ancestors came to Massachusetts in the 1630's. The exact same time period that Houghton ancestors sailed on the Abigail to Mass. ---likewise in the 1630's. There is lot more interesting facts that could be said here, upon the Houghtons along with my ancestors but is too much to go into here. But one interesting fact particularly concerning the Shakespeare authorship controversy, is that William Shakespeare's Grandfather went by the name Shakeshaft. (This according to the aforementioned article's facts). And William of Stratford is refered to as William Shakeshaft, by Alexander Houghton. That is, a designation of the young adolescent boy who took an affinity to theater while he lived with the Catholic Houghtons in Lancashire. Why is there a discepancy of the names Shakespeare and Shakeshaft concerning the Stratford family of William's? And thus what is the true name of William of Stratford. Is it Shakeshaft or Shakespeare? Such is one more interesting historical fact to resolve on the English poet's heritage. |
