MLD Okay. The only think I do not see mentioned on here is Probiotics. Yogurt with LOTS of good bacteria. Water is definitely and incredibly necessary. But, long-tern constipation -years of it, cannot be solved with eating fiber and drinking water ALONE. Your guts need to function. I suggest a cleansing diet, bringing healthy foods gradually back in and get yogurt into your diet. The yogurt you choose is VERY important. The more varieties of bacteria, the better. The less corn syrup and colorants, the better. I like Stonyfield yogurt, but there are other good ones out there. 1/21/2010
a. Laxatives that create spasms can make the bowel dependent (that includes herbal laxatives), it gets overstimulated and basically burnt out and possibly permanently so. Osmotic laxatives (they draw fluid from the body into the bowel) do not but these need to be taken with loads of water (otherwise they won't well). Also other things have to be cancelled out. IE polyps, poor-diet, prolapsed bowel, exercise or rather lack of it, medications or drugs, cancer etc. Yes means a colonscopy but think of it this way if you don't get it checked out and it is sometimes much more serious then you still have to have it done and then maybe it will be too late. At least you will then have more choice in the the course of action to take. If all checks out okay and the bowel should work and it doesn't then it needs to be retrained. That means that you have to give it enough time to get used to the idea of working on its own. It may mean not taking laxatives except for once a week and then not the ones that create spasms. Drink loads of water (I drink 3 litres a day). If you do have to flush the system right out (really empty with some strong laxatives) then it may take several days for it to be full enough to empty again and then another couple of days before it can actually knows to move it out of its own initiative (the brain signals have to work to make this happen). If the bowel stops working and becomes dependent on the stimulant laxatives and then they stop working as the dose has to always be increased then it will eventually get to the stage that nothing will work (ever) and then the real scary part begins. Surgery! a bag for the poo. Conspitation barely exists in less developed countries the food eaten is not processed (ie the food does not come ready out of a packet - ever!), fresh water is drunk to satisfy thirst and they actually squat to do a poo. Think of it as potty training for adults. Not a joke but a serious issue. If you have been constipated for years then it's not going to be fixed overnight but persistence is the answer. Good luck 11/14/2009
Tess Thank you for mentioning the lethargy so acute that it does refrain one from even drinking water ... I have encountered that!
I will also take note of dry skin and not just put it down to my hypothyroidism ... though I understand that it also can be a cause of constipation. Nevertheless it comes down to how precious and essential drinking ten glasses of water is! If one doesn't like water then fruit juice - diluted should be tried. Anything is better than constipation and its toxins, the lethargy, the sluggishness, the unwellness, bloating, straining, being blocked and let's not get to the impacted bowel! You can see this is one of my pet hates!

Palani I have been suffering from constipation since 15 years old. Now, I'm 46. I did tried many methods but none is effective. Once, a doctor told me that I have developed lazy colon syndrome due to the habit of putting off the natures call during younger days. Could anyone advise me on an effective treatment? palani@tm.net.my 9/13/2005
Hi and thank you for your valuable suggestions,

Thanks for the info on sepcific ailments getting treated by specific people. I agree with you darren that some treatments are just not meant to be for some people. This article highlights the general behaviour and treatment for constipation. Generally water therapy helps.

Hope you have tried using the water therapy that is 1- 2 litres of water on an empty stomach Vallerie. I can imagine the torture you might be going through! Trust me try this out, drinking water that is. Try with lesser quantities, as in just about 1-2 glasses and slowly increase the volume. Also check into your diet. may be you are allowing certain food stuffs in your body that are making you constipated despite the volumes of your water intake! I shall try to help you out in this issue by looking it up!

Cheers

darren these suggestions are for people with "occasional" constipation. I have tried all that for years on end sometimes. Maintaining 3 liters of water and increased fiber intakes for that long until my doctor gave up himself 1.5 yr later. For some of us, these remedies don't work 6/1/2005
Valarie I have has problems going to the bathroom since the birth of my son 5 years ago. I am 28 now and suffer from chronic constipation. I exericise about 3 times a week. I avoid beef pork and dairy as well as fried foods. I have tried everything from stool softner, to fiber supplements (e.g. metamucil, cirtucel, fibercon, benefiber etc...), fleet suppositories, and laxatives, and enemas....they all work for a short while approx.....2 weeks and then stop being effective. Last year I became very ill and was diagnosed with diverticular disease. My feces no matter what I try is always small and hard and about the size of marble....This problem has effected my hemrrhoids and they also pain me daily now....I am at my wits end and seriously in need of solution that will help me move my bowels at least every other day 5/6/2005
