Alexander It is written above: "If you are familiar with Italian, use the polite ‘lie’ form until a relationship is established"

The form is 'Lei' (pronounced 'Lay') not 'Lie', I would suggest that you change it because Italians will not understand 'Lie'

R. Martin I live and work in Italy (I am British) your article is good but needs a couple of corrections/ updates.
"lie" is wrong it is spelt "Lei". Re dottore/ dottoressa- this is no longer obligatory- although anyone who has graduated or is in an important position likes to be called by these titles. Finally it could be worth mentioning that negotiation can be lengthy as Italians like to talk and if you need to deal with any official/state organisation the process can be comparatively slow, admin intensive and bureaucratic.
