matt Popsicle sticks? Here in the modern carpentry world we have shims actually, and they go in all 4 corners and midspan between them to plumb the window and keep the sash straight and square. This article says nothing about insulating around your new windows, which is one of the most important steps, unless of course you want a nice cold draft to go with your new windows. 11/1/2009

Jack Just a note, not all manufacturer's recommend the same procedures or materials. Be sure to read the installation instructions and recommendations from the manufacturer. You would not want to do anything or NOT do anything; that would void the warranty. Use of any foam might void a warranty or allowing the new window to float in the frame; might void it. 10/2/2008
Jack Its way too late to answer Brenda's question, but others with the current problem. Brenda said her windows were a half inch too tall/long. The response was to notch/rabbit out half inch from the header. The question that needs to be answered is. A half inch too tall to tilt in, or half inch too tall from final fit in its final location within the frame? First to do, call the seller's rep. If its a standard size replacement, then you might be able to do a return and reorder the correct size. A minor restocking charge might be cheaper than all this extra manual labor. But if you are stuck with the windows and its a matter of half inch too tall to tilt in and you have a standard one inch stock sill, then removing the sill (merely a trim piece) might be an easier solution. Especially if you consider having to level and shim in a notched out header. There are so many unanswered and unasked questions to properly answer that situation. BUT as they say measure twice and cut once; or in this case measure twice and order once. 10/2/2008
Jack John Rocco mentions nothing about instulation the sides of the window as well. Stuffing fiber insulation or the low pressure expanding foam. A major reason for installing new replacement windows is the energy savings of heat and air conditioning. There is not much sense in installing a new window to have a draft going around the sides of the new window. When you skip the little steps, you also skip important steps. Skipping instulation defeats a main benefit of new windows. Filling the inside nail holes with the improper material, is preparing for unprofessional paint finish. 10/2/2008
Jack If John Rocco has been doing this since 1978, then he's been a hack for 30 years. Does not recommend using any screws in the sides or using caulk to fill nail holes for preparing the inside stops. No mention of shimming with use of a level. Just shimming the corners, but not all the screw holes. Sounds like throwing in windows and moving to the next job as quickly as possible. Stated another way, install as fast as possible and never answer the phone when the complaints come six months later. He probably installs them on rotten sills too. 10/2/2008
Bob Kallgren Good instructions. Thanks. A question: is it okay to reinstall the storm window/screens which were on the house? This gives three layers of insulation for temperature and sound. One person said that might harm the new windows. Your take? 6/12/2008
Wayne I thought this article was very informative.

john1r Brenda, I wish I could help you, but other than trying to notch out 1/2" of wood at the header, there isn't anything you can do. 6/3/2007
doug fager What about foaming the space around the new window, and opening up space where old lead weights are to fill with insulation? 9/16/2006
Mark Hi John,

My wife and I have just moved to the Houston, TX area from Atlanta and are considering installing vinyl windows replacements. Could you comment on your opinion of the cheaper reputation of vinyl versus clad or other options in todays products?

Thanks,

Mark
