take it from someone who not only owns a green anaconda but almost 30 other snakes the reticulated python is the largest although its true the infamouse 48 foot snake tuned out to be little more then 20 foot its believed that the native people (who happen to pray to the reticulated python) simply did not give up the actual snake they believ to be a god however even if this extreemly large snake exist at 48 feet a retic wouldstill be under 800 pounds while retics get to be quite large the tend to stay slim especially in the wild where they would not recieve a weekly meal as far as anaconda (the movie) its not even close to realistic.....although these snakes do tend to come together during the breeding season oct. thru winter the size of the snakes is hollywood hype an nothing more the largest anaconda recorded is 30 feet but with out photo proof this is probably a case of fishermens tales ( in other words the snake grew allot from the time it was seen till the time someone told the story) i can tell you anacondas in captivity top out at 12-16 feet females and 10-12 foot males my female is 12 feet and while she is still growing her growth has slowed allot
oh and one more thing from the beginning of this board retics are not mean or agressive the snakes in your parents hous were plucked from the wild and as afraid of you as you may have been of it if given time to realize your no threat it would have calmed down although its harder to tame wild snakes especially when they are older......pluss think how you would feel if you were a snake caught in an area where your kind is killed for trivial things like your skin or to make snake oils that dont really cure anything i personally have 7 retics diferent types and diferent sizes my bigges right now is my female tiger at 17 feet and except for one time that was my fault ive only been bitten by young snakes that had not learned to trust me and the one time i got bitten by a large snake i had been feeding another snake and forgot to wash my hands b4 taking the water dish from the one that bit me's tank it my hand was about the size of its normal food smelt like a rabbit was mooving and warm.....set off all the feeding response and the snake bit me out of confusion not malice oh and to the person wondering about the teeth they look like little needles nothing amazing (till the bite lol) |

Anyway the largest trails in Venezuela riverbeds found was abouit 78 cm wide and researchers ,told it was fresh and this big female green,will be at least over 12,5 meter,according to their calculations ,it's physiological no big deal,!Bigger much larger Snakes are found in Africa Egypt and MAli,which are related to the rock python,the gigantophis ,...was maybe the king of all snakes,...time will tell,many new species are still to be discovered as well as fossils like the Gigantophis,.... |

There are some poisonous species yes like the Bushmaster,a big viper,and the Coral snake,but most dangerous are probably stinger Hornets and very nasty Ants,as well as ringworms and little meat eating fish who swam up your,....Big Theraphosidae spiders ,can bite but it wont kill,..... |

Yes about the reticulated ,our records shom about the one from 1912 in celebes, was 35 foot and another one seems just two foot longer later from Sumatra,further are records from JApan from a twelf meter animal, ,i've seen animals on film and for treal with a Girth of more than 45 cm , that s a real big Python,..wouldn't wanna mess with, the question who s bigger is difficult, teh retic is long and more very large Animals have been found, longer than 28 feet,,also the African rock is good for some records in this category, 1938,Ivory Coast an animal shot there measured close,to 34,feet and 6 inch,but this is an heavier built than retic for sure,...

hello Budman we're specailists on snakes, and like i said ,we did research in the Guyana's, we're looking for those reptiles ,all kinds of snakes ,more than 150 species are written down,and described by us,all species that are found in The northern parts of the Amazone, yes and most of us have studied,myself including now in nature sciences and biology, so what your talking about!!There are records more than 30 years collected by us |

Anyone in this room have a brain? Megalania, you speak of 1800 or 2200 pound anacondas? What drugs are you on? There is, and I will obviously have to repeat myself again, no EVIDENCE of any anacondas over 30 foot. What will it take to make people listen to me and not fabricated crap such as 1800 pound anacondas that can devour horses? Once again, the only snake in the world that has been measured at over 30 foot is the reticulated python! |

Hte LArgest trails they found had a diameter of more than 70 cm,scientific and geometric research ,showed that we're dealing with monsters of 1800 pounds or maybe 2200 pounds even, A herpetologists from Venezuela also said ,1200 to 1400 pounds is possible for a 30 footer,imagine what a 40 footer must be,.this thing can kill and devour a horse,...it would be fantastic to see such a creature.. |

Samantha, that retic was then professionally measured by an english zoologist and found to be 23 feet long! Not 49! For God's sake what is the problem with this 49 foot story? And Deathtress, Anacondas 33 foot long or more? There are NO VERIFIED lengths of anacondas going past the 30 foot mark - only the retic has done that. |

Which snake is the largest snake in the world, has been a debated topic for years. On average a reticulated python ranges anywhere from 22ft to some exceeding 33ft long. Anacondas on average tend to be anywhere from 20ft to reaching 33ft long or more. A 20ft anaconda weighs more than a 33ft retic. python. So, yes the anaconda is the heaviest snake in the world. But generally the retic is found to grow longer (I said generally). We will never truly know, b/c it is the wild. And there are alot that we haven't discovered yet!!!! |

I suppose it depends on what we mean when we say "largest snake." If we are talking weight, the anaconda beats the reticulated python. If we're talking length, the retic wins... I'm still very sceptical about the "49ft. python" captured in Indonesia though... |

Alrighty everyone, the "heaviest or largest'' snake in the world is without doubt the green anaconda. Although no lenghts of 30 feet (I think the longest officially recorded was around 27-28 feet) they are definitely the heavy weights of the snake world. I am sick of anyone being so naive to believe those pictures of the 49 ft retic! Bloody hell! It was 23 feet in length and then apparently shrunk? Righto. Longest officially recorded snake was a retic which was "just" over 30 foot. Do your research people. |

i don't know about the supposed forty nine feet by the reticulated python but i heard they can get pretty massive and the anacondas also but i think until someone actually captures one if possible haha without getting eaten..i heard of a reticulated python growing to about seventy feet o.O man that's huge.. but it was the skin though.. jeez.. |

Anaconda is the largest by weight and diameter. Interestingly its name comes from Srilanka. I guess those scientists responsible for this naming. The longest snake however is Phyton, and the longest one was captured in Sulawesi (Celebes), Indonesia. It was measured 32 feet. The rumor about the largest and heaviest phyton was captured in Sumatra, Indonesia, and later was brought to Central Java, Indonesia. It said 45 feet, but it was not true. I am an Indonesian who (used to) live in that area.
Things that I want to share about Phyton is the aggresiveness of this snake. When I was a teenager my parent's house become a temporary zoo. We got two new phytons, 15 feet and 20 feet from farmers. One of these was so aggresive that it hurt its own head! So I do not know why scientists said this snake is a shy snake. These two snakes finally escape from the (my unfinished) tall house. The house did not have a roof, but it was 7 meter high (2 stories building). The whole town got crazy and panick!! Up until now we do not understand how they can escape. Let's do the math... less than 7 meter snake can escape 7 meter wall.... maybe the two snakes collaborated to escape? |

Jeez people - doesn't anyone know how to do a web search??? Check the link - it has video of the awesome snake that everyone needs to see! The Herpetologist who mentioned the 49 foot reticulated python was right, it is the longest snake ever recorded officially. There are unofficial reports of Anacondas 60 feet and longer, and the Amazon jungle is a big big place so most people agree that ones that large or larger may be possible. And so is Indonesia, and that is why the big Python had plenty of room to snack on big prey and grow to such a Gi-normous size. Now, in captivity, they (sadly) feed it dogs. |

I am a herpatologist and I believe that the green anaconda can reach a world record length, but as for now the reticulated python holds the record and probably will for a while since the odds of finding a snake above 30 feet long is almost impossible. |

While the Reticulated Python is indeed the longest snake in the world, the "world record" 49 foot specimen was a little off the mark.
When it was reported, then measured, it was found to only be about 22 feet.
