R.W. Welch Actually, the Atlantis plain was larger than 300 x 200 miles (ca. 340 x225). The main problem though is the lack of evidence for catastrophic destruction. (The submergence of Dogger Bank was gradual.) More likely Atlantis was a supervolcanic island off Portugal that exploded in the 17th century BC. Lča Rose if there was a lost underwater city once wouldn't it be gone by now-12,000 years later? & seabeds do change overtime. But how come we only have Platos word for it? wouldn't others have heard about this or at least recorded the story or given critism if Plato made it up? 11/30/2004
