With all of the talk of professional golfers in better shape than ever, I though it was time to address the issue of whether golfers are athletes. Find out what I think and why.

Dennis You seem to be focused on the fitness of the people involved. If an accountant is very fit, does that make accountants athletes? You need to look at what is required to play golf. Exceptional strength?-No. Speed?-No. Quick reflexes?-No. Etc. If having to put up with long walks on a course makes golfers athletes, then hard-working people of many walks of life are athletes since they have to be durable to do their job. Perhaps if golfers had to wrestle each other for their clubs or if they had to out run their opponents to the next tee, they might be considered athletes. As you said, golfers are gamers, not athletes, like pool players, bowlers, dart throwers etc. Besides, what is so important about being a gamer instead of anathlete? 2/4/2008
hockeyman Golf is a sport, yes, but golfers are no more athletes than a pool player, dart player, or bowler. An athlete is someone who competes in sports that require rigorous physical activity. Golf is 100% technique and 0% athletecism. 9/4/2006
Peter According to dictionary definitions, golf is a sport... but golfers are not necessarily athletes. Some golfers are also athletes, but it's because of what they do outside of golf. 7/29/2006
