How Lazy Parents Make Happier Kids and Stronger Marriages

My mother always said that the best parents are lazy parents. Her theory, as I understood it, was that lazy parents don't jump up every time their kids need something so that children learn to entertain themselves, enjoy themselves, and become more independent.

Cassandra This article is great. It has solid, simple facts and information. As a family support worker I could definitely see myself sharing this information with my clients and recommending that they read Dr. Lindquist's book. 6/14/2009
heather I totally agree with laxing on the rules as long as you create at least a little bit of a limit. This is so hard to do when you have the grandparents looking over your shoulder at everything they deem as modern parenting. I know my mom still relys on advice and rules from the 80's. No wonder most families see each other only a few times a year. i wish my parents and in-laws talked to us just on holidays. I would feel so much freer to make my choices on rules. 8/27/2008
Valerie I am familiar with lazy parents, I have a step-daughter & a son-in-law that fit that description. Their house, their cars, their yard and their 3 children are always filthy. They've had 5 pets in the last 5 years, yet only one is still living and that's not counting the 2 litters of kittens or the fighting fish. Their marriage from what I see consists of rude remarks and selfish acts. And their children are the ones that suffer the most. Food left out for days, unsanitary bathrooms & kitchen, dangerous play areas, the list goes on. And far be it for me to speak up, their bio-parents never straighten them out and I'm only the step-mom/step-mom-in-law. Unbelievable that anyone could say lazy parents make good parents! 7/15/2008
