I will be starting the Sunday after the 4th of July and I will be going food shopping on the 30th or probably earlier. I need to bring my list of foods. |

Great comments and I like the idea of the treadmill desk a lot. I found the TrekDesk at their website by the same name to be the best product for my needs. |

I have been following the principles of the abs diet for about a year now but have been cheating a lot...and I've still lost twelve pounds! This is just from trying to eat the "Power 12" most of the time. In my opinion, the book has good, solid nutrition advice. One of my own quick recipes: mix an egg or two with a large spoonful of ricotta cheese, add chopped spinach and a sprinkle of parmesan cheeze. Scramble in a nonstick spray coated pan. It's fast, it's easy, and it uses three of the power foods! |

The "abs diet" is great. Do not come in thinking that this a typical fad diet, because it is not. This is something that you can for as long as you live since it is not based on extreme habits (eat no carbs, drinking only grapefruit juice, eating cardboard). This "diet" is based on a healthy lifestyle.
I do think that the title is misleading. First and foremost, it is not a diet, it is more of a lifestyle change. Most (if not all) of the information presented is what you already know (ie 5 servings of fruits...yada yada).
However, I think that the way it is presented and the structure/organization of the plan it suggests is great. That is the biggest contribution that this book will give you. That is why I had the most problem with. I knew I can eat healthy, just did not know how to do it. This book provides you with a meal plan and RECIPES healthy food.
The book can almost coarsely summed up in a few sentences. Follow the food pyramid, diversify your food. Cut salt and fats (saturated) to minimum. Increase protien, fiber, and water intake. Eat 6 meals per day, 3 meals and 3 snack meals. For most foods, a serving size is about the size of your fist, good rule of thumb (or fist). Of course, that was the tip of the iceberg and the book provides more detailed information.
The great thing is that just becoming educated about food helps you make healthy choices. The first thing that I looked for on nutrition labels was calories.
I now look low levels of a) sodium b) saturated/trans fat c) sugars d) ingredients (i look for corn syrup and other syrups and anything overly processed).
What I look for in healthy food is unsaturated fat, carbohydrates, protien and fiber.
If you are willing to put some effort into this, it can be done. I myself am a success story of this, going from 260 to 205 in about a year and I've been at this weight for 2 years now. I have also helped many of my family and friends begin the "abs diet" and lose weight. Total weight that has come off this book in my cohort 12 people is approximately 476 pounds! That totals the weight for 3 "healthy" adults, so tell the Census that the U.S. population went down by 3.
Final thoughts, if you do not believe in "fad diets" just do yourself a favor and don't eat fast food or overly processed foods, follow the food pyramid and get some exercise. |

The "Abs Diet" is a wonderfully all together plan. As long as you are actually pushing yourself during the workouts and interval training sessions, you'll do well. We added a few extra moves (with dumbbells at home): deadlift to curl to press to calf raise. A chin up bar is great for chin ups and pull ups, which are also great, multi-muscle moves. If you forget to eat correctly, you won't do as well. Cut the high fructose corn syrup, trans fat, and really cut out non-whole wheat flour items. Even if its hard to, you have to remember to snacks. You need lots of whole grains and lots of protien/Whey powder (and a multivitamin never hurts). This program works only as well as your dedication -- eating and working out. You must actually work during the workouts -- with enough weight to make a difference. |

To all those that are not losing weight, this is most likely because you are gaining muscle. You should buy a Body Fat Counter to monitor progress. If you still arent losing fat, then get up and do the cardio, it's definetly not your diet thats the problem |

Hi- I just started the ABs diet about 3 days ago. I love it! Anyways, I have just a little question about the whey powder... does it make you gain weight? I was just wondering because all of the men (boyfriend, brother-in-law, uncle...etc...) i have talked to say it makes you gain weight when you stop using it. I can't find anything on the internet... please answer... THANKS!!! |

hey lily- just a suggestion for your lost book- don't know if you've remedied this problem already, but if you haven't, you can always look at your local public library. i know the libraries where i live have the book, and checkout time is usually a good two weeks (and you can always renew). hope this helps. |

I read the book over spring break and started today. I am very excited and think the plan will work for me. I too go to Curves 3-4 times a week and walk on my treadmill at home. I will incorporate more abdominal exercises from my Beach Body tapes (they are excellent and you can really feel the burn within the first workout). It was interesting to read about the smoothies, because I just started making my own with 1% milk, low fat yogurt, frozen fruit, 2 packets of splenda and ice. I went out and bought some whey protein which did add some consistency to the smoothie. They are very filling. I usually make one for breakfast or lunch, depending on how busy I am. I am glad to see I can now eat almonds again. They were a lifesaver for me when I was on Adkins (which did not work for me and was toooo boring). They really takes great mixed with cheese. I plan to keep in touch and let everyone know how I am doing. I am also interesting in how everyone else is doing and if you can come up with some different ideas for food choices. |

Hi Nate, The diet suggests Stonfield farm smoothies because it doesn't have high fructose corn syrup in it. I haven't seen it myself in a grocery store, but the book also only suggests this as a back up smoothie. |

amy It is going.. weekends just kill us though. We are so busy that sometimes we don't eat as often and then we are so hungry that we out but still try to be smart about it. A girl I work with is doing Weight Watchers and she is losing 2lbs a week. And it is weird how many more things she can choose from when eating out. Anyway we had a really bad weekend so we are going to get back on track this week. Does anyone know what is our options for tuna sandwiches?

You are right SuzyQ about the slow weight loss, however I am losing inches. My clothes are loose and my co-workers are beginning to notice that I'm losing weight. Not a major difference on the scale, but that's just a number and it's to early to test the bodyfat percentage. I do notice that the weightloss is mostly in the stomach area. The hunger pains that I was having is now under control, and I believe that I'm on the right track in time for my big day!!!! I'll keep you up to date, and I love the way that I feel on this diet. |

I have only lost 3 lbs the first 2 weeks. I had set a personal goal for 2 lbs a week. We had to go out of the state all of the sudden and instead of a cheat meal, I had a cheat weekend. It is so hard to eat right when traveling. Anyway, I am back on it and started the Abs exercises last night. I noticed that the portions/calories for the recipes in the book are high for a female. I have been trying to monitor that as well. I was really hungry as well the first couple of weeks. It seems that my body has finally gotten accustomed to the change. Hang in there Jennifer. Keep us all posted. |

Hey everyone, Where have you all been? Anyway, it's been one week on the diet and I haven't notice any major changes, I think that I had one to many glasses of wine on Saturday which may be one of the reasons behind the theory. I'm still always hungry, especially in the evenings. My bodyfat is 21.4%, so i'll keep testing to see if the abs diet really works. I'll keep in touch, hope that you all do as well. |

Hi There, I find everyone's comments very interesting, this diet is new to me, I came acrossed it at a book store. I've only been on the diet for 3 days, the count is on because I'm getting married in Cuba in April. Still unsure of the portions, I feel as if I may be eating to much but I'm hungry often. I workout 6 days a week and did so before this new diet. I'll cross my fingers!!!!! |

Thanks Bekka!! After writing the first time, I noticed all of the listings below, and that you had spoke of 'is this appropriate for women' before. Are you making the full meals or are you cutting them in half? Also, I noticed the shakes made two (2) 12 oz. shakes, so I have reduced that to having 8oz. each time. The meals are so great by the way! I feel full all the time, which in turn makes me actually feel like I am gaining weight. I will check on my BMI at week 2.
ALI--I actually bought, The Abs Diet Eat Right Every Time Guide that Bekka had suggested. It hasn't arrived yet, but I trust there will be plenty of meal options included. |

Hi there, Yes this diet is extremely appropriate for women--you do have to watch your calories of course. The smoothies are fine calorie-wise. The other recipes, just modify size-wize. This is such a healthy way to eat. If you ask all the experts and look at all the different non-fad diets, this is the way to get lean--not just thin. :) My parents started it and feel fantastic.

This plan 'seems' great, fantastic actually-- I have been doing the program for 1 week now. However, I still have yet to find a clear answer as to whether this program is appropriate for women too. I am worried that I may be eating to much, and that the intake should be reduced for women. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated! |

Hi! I am an Abs Diet fanatic. Not only is it a healthy way to eat, but I have lost weight on it. I started my new year's resolution too and started the diet strict! on January 2nd (Jan 1st was party day). I lost 5 pounds in the first week and have 10 more to go to get to my goal. I'm excited to see another active Abs Dieter. To start a support group either we can do it on here or I can research other sites that offer that sort of thing. Check back here. If you want to post here for now I'd like that!

Hello everyone! I just got the book and started the Abs Diet 1/3. You guessed it, New Years Resolution. I want to lose about 30 lbs. I would be interested in tracking results and having a support system. Anyone have an idea as to the best way to do this? |

Twinkle Toes.. when i slip i don't gain all the weight back. Let's say I pig out at dinner. The next morning i'll be up a pound or so but by the next few days (making sure I work out) it comes right back off. I'm five feet tall, so keeping weight off is a very large challenge for me. I smell chocolate and gain two pounds :)! So I've resolved to do this diet until I'm at my ideal weight. Between moving and then the holidays, my dedication has been sporadic. I weighed in this morning (Jan 1st) and now my body better watch out because the weight has nowhere to go but down. Anyone interested in starting with me and logging the weight loss once a week? Let's go girls!!! (as an aside, before the holidays i did the diet strict for a week and a half, everyone at work asked if i was eating because they said i look like i've lost a ton. I didn't actually get on the scale but you could see my abs!! Now, with the holidays, i believe it's water bloat logging me down--but i'm motivated!) |

I bought The Abs Diet after reading about it in an article in Prevention Magazine. Although I recognized it to be a diet for men, I also recognized it to be a good, sensible diet, and since I had a spare tire I wished to get rid of, I decided to try the diet.
Let me tell you, IT WORKS! I have lost about 15 pounds, but more importantly I have lost most of my spare tire.
The most important thing is that I was on the diet through Thanksgiving and Christmas and didn't feel cheated. On Thanksgiving, that became my "cheat meal" and the same on Christmas. I was able to eat the goodies and not feel like I left the diet.
Perhaps the one aspect of the diet (or better still, life style) is the exercise. One "perk" is that being a woman, I can go to Curves (for women ony) and work out three times as week on strength training with a bit of cardio. The combination - well let me tell you - I've gone down 1-1/2 sizes. I have give the book to some of the women at Curves and they are all intending to start at the beginning of the year.
Well, as you can see, I am an Abs Diet fanatic. When I get down to where I really want to be (which now seems like something I can do) maybe I'll even send a before/after picture.
Until then, thanks for a realistic and easy diet. |

Hi everyone. I just bought the Abs Diet book and was going to start January 1st, but I am thinking I will start it sooner rather than later. I would like to get together a "support group" to share goals, progress, and recipes with. Please e-mail me at alajaunie@sw.rr.com if you guys are interested in keeping in touch. I think it will be easier to do it together than alone. I look forward to hearing from all of you.... Thanks |

You can lose the 10 pounds if you are consistent. You will not get bulky, that is a myth. To get bulky a woman must workout a LOT and you'd know if you were doing that. Feeling hungry is natural when trying to lose weight. Keep it up =) |

Hello, I just started this program on Nov 29th. I'm a little gun shy because I did Body for Life and didn't see the results that I felt I should. Like all the other women, I am wondering how this will work for me. I do not eat as much as he suggests, but I always have the problem of feeling hungry after I eat...and this is after I have had his power foods etc. I don't think I should get more than 1500 calories a day and this is currently what I am getting on his program. This is more than I am used to eating. I don't think I should up my calories but I feel so hungry sometimes. Anyhow I like the workouts, I'm just skeptical, I only need to lose maybe 10lbs. Any suggestions??? Also twinkletoes, where did you find an internet site for a woman's version? Thanks! |

I started the Abs Diet on Monday. I have about 25 pounds to lose. I am 6 feet and weigh 202 pounds. I will update my progress as I go. So far, the diet seems to be working. Hi Everyone, I purchased the book this weekend and am starting tomorrow. I would like to lose 20. The diet appears to be very geared toward men and I plan to trim the portions pretty significantly. When I went to purchase the whey protein the lady recommended the soy protein. She said it was a better choice for women since the whey protein may increase cholesterol and add more bulk than I am interested in. Looking forward to workin with ya all. Jacki |

Bekka, I have a question for you, When you do slip of this diet, do you gain all the weight back. I am 20 yrs old, and a colleg athlete. In the past yr i have gained about 30 lbs I am 5"7', and i weigh 170. I am really depressed about how much weigh i have gained, I am kind of scared about dieting, because I do not want to diet for the rest of my life, but I need to do something. Any Advice |

Hey guys, I started the abs Diet today. I started it two weeks ago and i was also concerned that it was geared towards men, so I got on the internet, and I am doing the diet online. It plans out my meals for me and it plans out my workouts. It also asked if i was a male or female, I know i is set up for a female because my boyfried did it also and his meals are a lot bigger than mine. So my advice to all the women who are concerned with the diet leaning towards men, just cut the portions down. I do have one question thought when do you guys eat drink your smoothies. Do i use it like a meal replacment, or for a snack I am really confused.

Hi everyone: As promised, here is my check-in.After week 1: 2.5 pounds lost Change noticed: My "poach" is more deflated. I ate perfect last week, but had one dessert each day this weekend. I did go to the gym everyday except tuesday. Airbruton is right, the bodyforlife workout is great! My body needed something new, i've noticed changes in my arms even after 1 week! I don't feel that guilty. But i'm back to eating strict today. Lily, what is your email? |

I have been on the ABs diet for 2 weeks now, and I am seeing terrific results. I have always worked out, but have problems with my diet. This book I would say is not really a diet per say, but a lifestyle change. It's awesome. I have a small problem though. It a totally new routine for me and when I do it I have to follow along with the book. Well on Friday I forgot it at the gym and someone walked off with it. I can't afford another $50.00 at the moment but want to continue with it for the entire 6 weeks. I would appreciate it if someone could email me the workouts for Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. I remember the exercises, but not the order in which to do the circuit. Please any ones help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.............. |

It certainly does work, but its not really a "diet" per se. The reason its geared to men is that its about gaining muscle as a way of burning fat. Presumably women may not necessarily be so keen. Certainly using weight as a measure of how its going is worse than useless; if its really working well, your weight may actually increase (muscle weighs more than fat remember, but also 1LB muscle = 50 calories burned a day doing nothing). Also, having read it thoroughly I think the point is not to obsess over what foods are "allowed"; its designed to be a longer term plan than that. The author is attempting to teach you which foods are healthy and how you can stop eating unhealthy foods more than anything else. |

To Bekka: I am new to this message board. I am 29 and a female who would just like to get healthy!! Thought I would join you on the abs diet. I have already read the book and I find that it makes sense. I did it for two week a while back and am now ready to start again. I hope to loose about 10-15 pounds. Good Luck. |

Hi everyone. 20toloose--i'm here for you. keep up the cardio and follow the diet. i am confident you will lose thost 20 pounds. Hang in there. I fell off the wagon for a while because of moving and other things but i'm back on it today--day one again and holding for 6 weeks (even through the holidays). This diet is for women as well. I am a huge advocate of this diet. You may see a slight increase at first because you are building muscle with the added protein. Ride it out and get exercising! I'll check in each week with a loss total. Anyone want to join me? I could use some support to stick to the diet. :) |

Does anybody know of other Internet forums or bulletin boards that are dedicated to the Abs Diet? This discussion would benefit from being able to break it out into multiple threads. On this board, it seems many people's questions get buried and are left unanswered. |

I am just a little confused on portion sizes for women. I am 5'4 and weight about 132 right now. The book seems more geared toward portions for men, so I really don't know how much to eat at each meal. Do you think you could help me out with that. Also, is Columbo Fat Free (fruit flavored) yogur allowed? Thank you. |

Folks, I am here to tell you that this diet does work. I have been combining the Abs Diet with the workout routine of the Body for Life and have seen tremendous results. In one month, I have lost 10 pounds of fat, and feel great. The "no-pack" became a 2-pack, and is now a 4-pack, and the 6 is close at hand. The main things to watch are the portions, and expecially the clock! I am a flight attendant, and I have to take my food with me for 2, sometimes 3 days at a time and grab whatever gym is at my hotel. If I can do it, anyone can. The real hunger- curbers are PB, almonds, and oatmeal. The reason I think the Body for Life work out works better, is that it builds muscle faster as the workouts are more intense but never more than 45 mins!! Check it out !! |

This is a wonderful book, I think it is easy enough for anyone to follow. I love the ab exercise moves and the meal plans. Most books tell you that you need to change your eating habits and then dont tell you how or what to eat. This book has it all and was well worth the money. Thanks |

I also heard about the program on Good Morning America. I bought and read the book and started the program. I immediately noticed that I was not hungry and my stomach had actually started to feel smaller. I do not have any scales, so I didn't weigh, but remember muscle weighs more than fat. I went on vacation and got off the program, but started back on it just 2 days ago. The biggest thing for me is that I am not hungry and I do feel I am losing. Give it time, it does take awhile for your metabolism to kick in gear. |

I have been working out doing a combination of cardio and strength circuit training for 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week for the past month. I can tell that my energy has gone up, and I have built quite a bit of muscle in such a short amount of time. Problem is, you really can't see it, because of my body fat. Females tend to carry more than males as we all know. I want to try a diet that will increase muscle and burn fat. I have read about two different ones that sound good for me and my lifestyle, however, I must choose, and am torn. One diet that I am looking into is The Abs Diet, the other is Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle. Any opinions or positions on either? |

Hi everyone. I am very new to this program and have been on it for a week now. I have unfortunately gained weight-no cheating as well. My weight per the scales indicated aprox. 3 lbs! I realize everyone's results vary and I will be trying to incorporate more activities which may help...has anyone experienced this initially. I think the book is fundamentally great but I do not want to stay with something that will make me feel and look worse. Thank you for your replies...beagle251 |

I thought I mentioned it before, but i've found that you most definitly can modify this diet. The portions in the recipe ideas, i find are too big and too many calories. I just cut them in half or make sure it's only between 200-300 each meal/snack. If i eat lesser of a snack, I'll eat more of a meal. Just watch the portion sizes if you are going to make those recipes. Otherwise, you can divise your own meals based on the power 12. Hope this helps. |

I've been reading the postings here and it seems as though no one ever answers the questions, especially those pertaining to this program working for women. Does anyone know if it can be modified for women? |

This diet does nt work!!!! I am 28 yrs old male. I had 15.9% body fat beofre the diet. I went on the deit and immediately my body fat went up to 17.8% It uses some good things the 6 meals a day, exercise, low sat fat foods, but I was doing that before. I was trying to get to a point where I had washboard abs, and this diet make the opposite for a fit person. |

I everyone. Thought I'd chime in. I did the Abs diet for 4 weeks this summer. I didn't make it to six because we went on vacation. I've been on it for another 3 making my way to 6. Then i'll start another six. Having benchmarks helps. I haven't lost a ton of weight on the diet. I had lost 22 eating right and exercising and now would like to lose the "last 10 pounds". i've found that running, working out etc. facilitate the weight to fly off faster than not. This diet does work for women, but I would watch the portion sizes. Yes the book is written in men-speak but it's because of the author is from men's health. This diet is effortless and is a great way of life. Oh, though I haven't lost a ton, i feel and look a lot smaller. My face is way thinner and I am in a smaller size. I think all the protein and lifting building muscle and bone density so hang in there girls! It'll come off, one pound or half a pound per week (more if you have more to lose, so I've found for myself!). We'll do it together!!! |

I am replying to some of the messages placed by a few women that are on this site. I have been doing The Abs Diet for a little over a week, and I feel like my stomach is getting a bit "poochy". At least, i definitely don't feel like it's getting any flatter. Could it be the fact that my body/metabolism just has to adjust to the fact that I'm eating more than I had been for months. If anyone has any answers, please respond. It is getting pretty discouraging |

First, everyone should throw away their scales or at least commit to weigh yourself 1-2 times a month. A more important indicator when you're incorporating weight lifting is measurements. I've been on the Abs Diet for about 6 weeks. I have lost about 8 inches (2 off my waist) and that probably equates to about 6 lbs. The reason you can't watch the scale is because you're building muscle which weighs more than fat. More muscle also revs up your metabolism which helps you lose the fat. I am female and have tried many, many programs. The Abs Diet is like other programs I have been on (which have worked when I followed them). The bottom line is something my husband says - find a program that will work for you so you will make it your lifestyle, not something you're "going on" and "going off". If you eat something or a meal that you weren't planning on eating, hey you've got to live your life - forget it and do better the next meal. Otherwise, you'll just fall into a pattern of "cheating" and probably walk away from the possibility of success. I don't agree the program is geared toward men. Yes, the book language is written for men, but follow the principles and you will see the results. But don't look for losing bunches of weight quickly (although perhaps you will) - look for solid, consistent results that will last as long as you incorporate the principles. I have a thyroid problem, so I have to constantly program myself that 1/2 to 1 lb. a week is a fantastic result. Throw away the scale, take your measurements (and don't measure yourself every day either!) and go for it. |
