Why is the number ‘thirteen’ considered to be unlucky?

Tom A 13 in any system just throws things off, in one way or another. Maybe the physical mechanics of a machine or an assortment of things (like floors, cars, participants at a dinner or race, etc...) work and function fine at face value but that "thirteen-ness" being what it is, and meaning and being disorder and chaos numerically stays dormant most times but occasionally strikes like a viper or disease whatever it's associated with, manifesting itself physically, functionally, and eventuality-wise. It's an unpredictable thing, probably. It's like the anemones in the sea that sting and kill practically everybody who swims too close except for that one damnedly lucky fish who LIVES in it. 9/6/2004
Tom And I know how to spell "Russian." I misspelled it for some reason. 9/6/2004
Tom Well, if you watched this year's Olympics you've certainly heard of the terrible results of Ms. Perdita Felicien's attempt at that hurdle race, wearing (and to me this is just incredible...I don't know why she didn't just insist on her number being changed)...# 1313. Upon starting her run, she not only tripped at the VERY FIRST HURDLE, which is unlucky, she took out one of her fellow runners, the Russion Schevechenko. Talk about unlucky! But I hear that Felicien had had luck (unbelievably) in the past with this number so I kind of get the feeling that maybe she REQUESTED this number? And to me that's like playing with fire. Tempting fate. If you have to deal with it that's fine but if not you don't have to prove anything and just chose another number. I'll never forget the story of a Captain Friday who one Friday 13th set sail on the Friday at 1:00 PM with a crew of 12 for somewhere near 13 lat. and 13 long. He was never seen again. But then again for some 13 does seem to be lucky. I guess it differs from case to case. But I think the basic track record speaks for itself. 9/6/2004
