Water pressure: Do ships stop sinking?

This thought might have occurred to you. Water pressure, being such a tremendous force should be able to stop ships from sinking to the bottom of the ocean and leave them in an equilibrium state where they are balanced by equal pressures from all sides. Is it really true? Does theory and logic support this concept?

Riyadh Iron balances in mercury. but to make water as dense as mercury would require tremendous amounts of pressure. Very nice article.Keep it up. 5/21/2004
