Im a German Canadian who has lived here for 16 years. I find it weird how people accuse us of starting world war one. in fact, if anything, we were only defending ourselves. if France and Britain had responded to our Ultimatum to stop mobilizing troops, we wouldnt have invaded France, or any other country for that matter, so you Frenchies and Brits need to lay off about it. And about ww2, what good is it calling present day Germans Nazi's? mmh? we obvioulsy arnt, and the German people had no control over what hitler and his Nazi party did. We couldnt stop what he was doing, unless we wanted to be executed. You cant blame us for the Concentration camps, or the war crimes committed by the German Reich. IT takes soldiers to committ war crimes, not civillians. Most of the German soldiers wernt as blood drunk as they are portrayed to be, read a history book. They were simply following orders just as the brits and french were. and we wernt the only one to committ war crimes, but you only hear about ours because we lost. if we had of won, you would hear about the Russian shooting of over 1000 german prisoners, and plenty more who were malnusrished in POW camps. You would hear about the 75 murdered German POW's in Caen, France. My Grandfather was one of them. Your lucky to have won, or else all YOUR war crimes would be known world wide. So, in the end, we arnt as big of dicks as you think, and we arnt Nazi's, and you Brits and Frenchies are just as guilty as us when it comes to war crimes. |

Very educated! I am a German who's lived in England for seven years. I must say I've never experienced more hatred towards Germans by any other nation than the brits. Awful! It just shows the level of education. I've met some great people while living in England. Unfortunately the common tattooed english man was horrid! Very sad! We musn't forget what happened over sixty years ago but we should learn from it. We can't get it right if we allow to let the lower class people take over! By the way, I've lived in several countries but I've never experienced as much violence, hooliganism, binge drinking and anti social behaviour until I came to England. I find it rather sad as England is such a beautiful country! |

I have just the watched Schindlers List film with my son as they are finding out about the war. Understandable as it is remembrance day tomorrow the school has asked to find out about the world wars.
I had to explain to move son why people would kill other people, He is eight year old and unfortunately he was sitting at the top of the stair watching the program with out us knowing.

And even if I weren't part German (and yes I have ancestry which was Jewish that was wiped out by Nazis who happened to be German) I wouldn't hate Germans because the Nazis killed innocent Germans as well as the British. I think that we have done bad thing in our life (and were once overrated) and I am not offended by this article because I understand that your grandfathers were wiped out by the Nazis. Some of my Scottish ancestry were wiped out by the English. Although that happened to the Scottish, the English are not all bad. But, Germans are not totally bad and we can fix this by thinking of the future and how that will turn out. Not all Germans are bad. Not all English people are bad. I know now there is a law that forbids any kind of facism, because I am sure they are guilty of world war II. Genocide has been in every country's dark past, but that is why United Nations has been created. United States has been guilty of treatment towards slaves, and native americans. But it's a part of our history, and so we try to fix it. It seems that the descents of the evildoers are the ones who pay for the crime. This may come as a shock to you, but not ALL German people were Nazis. Many were against Hitler's ways, but were forced to fight. Some got out of it. And many Nazis weren't even German! But nobody EVER thinks about that. It's always "German people did this..." "German people did that..." It's always us who get the entire blame. Never the other countries who were involved. And while WWII was terrible, times and views have changed since then. And if so many people are still mad at only ONE of the countries involved...a country where peace is emphasized and Nazism is illegal...then I think it's time to come to terms with the fact that maybe people like YOU are the racists.

An insightful article on a powerfully emotive topic.
I am a 5th generation Australian (of English and Russian decent) whose Grandfather fought the Germans in WWI and then the Japanese in WWII.
Like many Australians, I possess equally strong antipathies to Germany historically and generally as well, feeling however right or wrong, that they should not be forgiven.
Of course, I've grown up brainwashed by a hundred re-runs of old war movies but having discussed this with a close friend (who is a British expat) we both admitted to a fear that we would inevitably be required to go to war ourselves in some similarly disastrous conflict. If we were lucky, we might get to kill other men and live with the guilt or perhaps sit out a war in a POW camp. Neither of us has a particularly optimistic outlook on world peace and I feel this characterises my generations nihilistic and anti-religious world view.
We have enjoyed 60 years of relative peace while living in continuous readiness for war and the threat of nuclear Armageddon. Our established social structures crumble as we enjoy greater consumerism through technological military advancement. We voyeuristically watch the welfare of entire continents suffer at the expense of unfair trade impositions and 'unusual' weather and we still have more books and documentaries about WWII than we should ever need to take lesson from.
I hate the Germans because for the common man, the war is never over.
So where is the next front? I'll keep an eye on the post-box in case I'm called to defend my country or the Commonwealth on another person's soil. Until then, I think I'll just go spend some more credit on the card and enjoy. |
