The Guardian Profile: Thabo Mbeki

South Africa's president has never relied on kissing babies to win office; he has kept his distance from voters, and sought respect rather than popularity. Now the ANC leader has found a common touch and his public are responding with delight.

Robert Benjamin Dear Honorable President,

I writing you this letter to let you know my concern about my country, Haiti. The George Bush Administration has kidnapped our president, Jean-Bertrand Aristide, on February 29th. Since the incident occured, Haiti has been struggling with disappointing events such as violence, kidnapping etc. by the government, Gerard La Torture, which Jeff Bush has been put in power. Now, we had organized a free election and elected President Rene Preval to be put in power. We are requesting that President Aristide return to Haiti. The reason why is Haiti is his hometown and he should be allowed to live in Haiti. George Bush's Government, the French Government, and the Canadian Government refuse to let Aristide return to Haiti. How can you help us fight the Government to help the citizens of Haiti and the citizens in the U.S. that represent Haiti get what they deserve? The real reason the Republican Government always have a problem is that they don't want the Haitian government to develop. They don't want the Haitian citizens to live the way we live in America. They don't want to improve the system they use over there. They want us to suffer, not to live regularly, but mostly let us get tortured by people who doesn't have the right to violate our rights. In 1949, the Government of Dumarsais Estime called a company named Atlantic Reffining Company or Atreco for the research of hydrocabure (I don't know the translation of this word) petrol in Haiti. They found it in a place called Caradeux not to far from the International Airport. When the company reached Haiti, the former president of Haiti was removed by order of the United States Government. In 1980, the Minister of Mines in Haiti was an engineer geologist who went to Caracas to restart the communicate with Venezuelian Exploitation of Petrol which the Venezuelian Petrol connected with Haiti. One commander went to his hotel and tried to assassinate him. The Venezuenlian Policeman saved his life and shipped him off to Haiti. That's the same reason Jean-Bertrand Aristide has been kidnapped and was sent away because he attemped to do the same thing President Dumarsais Estime attempted to accomplish. Please Mr. Honorable President, the Haitian citizens needs your assistance more than ever. Thank you for your time and cooperation.
Sincerely,
Mr. Robert Benjamin
