T,Tumbleson Michelle is a gifted young lady. Young lady is the key word here. She was miles ahead of of the kids her age. She has had the all the best of everything coming up in the sport of golf and then she turns pro a 16. I don not think that a 16 year old who can't win on the LPGA should be able to keep on recieving sponsor exemptions. She needs to play the LPGA events and when she has won everything there is and has beaten the best the LPGA has to offer then let her do what most everybody has to do to play on the PGA , earn their way on. Has she and the people around her not heard of Q-school? Maybe she should give it a try. I think it would be better for her and golf if she did. Don't get me wrong, she has talent and if she does not burn out, she will be someday setting the bar for the rest on the LPGA, but first she needs to be able to compete with the ladies on the LPGA on a regular bases and WIN befor she tries to take over Tigers' job. Many men would like it if they didn't have to go thru Q-school to earn their way on to a PGA event. It is not fair to them who are out there every week battling for a spot and have some one be given a spot that they end up so far from making the cut each time. I wish Michelle the best but she needs to back up and take each step to the top. 9/15/2006

Stephanie Real good rebuttal there Mr. Duvall. "to have the audacity to complain, instruct, or even suggest Michelle Wei shouldn't be trying to accomplish what she is doing now, is rediculous! Sad really." Do you read Mr. Duvall? There are news, sports, political, business, life, and just about any other kind of columnist who express their opinions on many subjects and through many mediums. So, what you're saying is that anyone with an opinion that is either printed or verbalized shouldn't express it. Oops, I had the audacity to express my opinion. 7/31/2006
Rick Derek Duval: you really need to rethink the way you present information. You jump to all sorts of wrong conclusions about this article and your 'analysis' is a joke. The two Dave's (not sure if same guy) hit the nail on the head. The writer is simply saying 'let's wait and see' before viewing her as the next great player because others have come and gone. He's not criticizing her career path nor her talent when she was 14. Anyone that comments here should first look when the article was published. In any sport, it is not who controls the game, (as you said Michelle Wie did at the Evian) it is who wins. There are no trophies for best controller.
Derek Duvall: Please post how many tournaments Michelle Wie will win so we can look back thirty years from now and say that you are wrong if you miss by even one. Turnabout is fair play.
7/31/2006
Dave Pennock Derek: I think you made a complete fool of yourself with your comments. They were easy pickings for anyone with intelligence. 7/31/2006
Steven White Hey Derek:

Could you please tell us who is going to win the 1985 World Series? A writer from Sports Illustrated for the Spring Training issue that year predicted that it would be the Mets or the Yankees. Please tell him how wrong he was with your wonderful gift of hindsight. The Kansas City Royals you say? Okay, I'll go with that.

Rob Thompson It seems like every Monday this board gets comments on Michelle Wie. I have to agree with Dave and Keith; using today's facts for an article written long ago is silly and pointless. Hindsight is 20/20 as some have said. Sure Michelle needed to learn the game in 2004. The game of golf is a constant learning experience, so while JB could have used a better choice of words, he is essentially correct. Even Nicklaus in his prime and Tiger Woods say they are constantly learning. It seems that nowadays those that doesn't agree with Michelle Wie's career path are in danger of being called "Wie haters' or something similar. Just because a person doesn't agree with something doesn't make him a 'hater'.

Keith Derek: You're rebuttal to John Berkovich's article is the one way off the mark. I love this one: "She will be winning LPGA tourns long after your retired and watching her every Sunday. Then you said she has alot to learn. What could you teach her....The girl has insight to golf you and most others will never contemplate." Like Dave said, assumptions or perhaps a better term is potshots. Everyone is entitled to an opinon but a "ha ha look at MW now John Berkovich" comment long after the date of an article reminds me of my son who tells me with four seconds left who is going to win the football game. It's cute because he's 3 and doesn't know any better but as an adult it's pathetic.

Those that use the here and now to criticize where a writer may have been wrong on a thirty month old article with the benefit of hindsight are no different that someone predicting Tiger was going to win the 2000 US Open (he won by 15) as Mr. Woods walked toward the 18th green on Sunday. How pathetic.

Dave Derek:

When John wrote this article it was January of 2004 and you are making your comment on the second last day of July 2006. Did you notice when the article was written??? You are commenting with the benefit of 2.5 years of hindsight. As I said with Bill Fennelly and John McEnroe, where was your comment 2.5 years ago WHEN THE ARTICLE WAS WRITTEN???? Of course Michelle Wie is an improved golfer and has surpassed Vickie Goetze because THE ARTICLE WAS WRITTEN IN EARLY 2004 AND IT IS NOW MID-2006 and she has improved tremendously. You have the benefit of 2.5 years of hindsight, the writer of this article didn't. I can't believe how many people make comments on this messageboard about John being wrong well after the fact. Well, duh!! Hindsight is 20/20.
"She has gutts and determination unlike you have ever seen, so you cry about it. Where does it say in that article that John cried? How do you know what guts John Berkovich or anyone he knows has? How do you know Michelle Wie has more than JB or anyone he knows? Please present proof of that. Or are you just making assumptions with no basis in fact?

"Will Michele Wei travel the same route? It will be interesting to watch." Yes, that is a question, but to have the audacity to complain, instruct, or even suggest Michelle Wei shouldn't be trying to accomplish what she is doing now, is rediculous! " Have you, Derek Duvall, ever suggested, instructed, or complained about anything? Of course you have, just like I have. Does not the US Constitution allow for free speech and opinions?
"You complain about her short game. She is on such an accelerated rate of improvement, it is hard to believe your editor let you print that." John didn't complain, he pointed things out. Golf experts back in January of 2004 (again, WHEN THE ARTICLE WAS WRITTEN) pointed out her weak short game, that now, in 2006, is much improved.
"Again, face it! She has more all around game than you want her to have." Where does the article say that? It doesn't. Again, please present facts and quotes of the conversation that you had with John Berkovich where he says this. Or are you again jumping to conclusions with no basis in fact?
"Michelle is in a world of her own and soon will own yours too." Do you know John Berkovich, Derek Duvall? Do you know his world or Michelle Wie's?" How will she own John Berkovich's world? Will she run his life and make his decisions in life, thus, owning his world? Again, please present facts of John Berkovich's world to support thsi statement. What a "burned out comment that has no basis in reality" to borrow from you.
I'll tell you what Derek Duvall, why don't you write an article on this board tomorrow and post it? In 2009 I'll come on this board and criticize where you were wrong. That is, after all, what you are doing to John Berkovich. In the future, you may want to learn how to construct an argument rather than make assumptions of John Berkovich's world and present them as fact.
I'm sure there will be more of these type comments when she starts winning. Then, people can say "Ha, I told you so John Berkovich. Look at her now. I am so smart."

Derek Duvall John,

This article of yours, "Wei too much Michelle," is so far off base. You don't have a clue. You said, "...yet, she has a long way to go to make it on the LPGA. She still needs to learn the game..." You are sideliner. She doesn't have a long way to goor need your advice. She is 2nd in the world. She has made it and then some. She is 16. She will be winning LPGA tourns long after your retired and watching her every Sunday. Then you said she has alot to learn. What could you teach her. Her physical talent alone didn't get her to where she is now. The girl has insight to golf you and most others will never contemplate. She took the exemptions because they offered. You would too. Most woman, aside from Anna and a few others, would have declined. She has gutts and determination unlike you have ever seen, so you cry about it. She is 16 and it is actually hard to believe she won't be making cuts on the PGA every year for the rest of her life. Get use to it. You complain about her short game. She is on such an accelerated rate of improvement, it is hard to believe your editor let you print that. Again, face it! She has more all around game than you want her to have. Your comparison to Vickie Goetz is like trying to compare Tiger at 18 to some college player who made a name for himself in the golfing ranks. You wrote, "...She played in 12 professional tournaments as an amateur and made the cut in nine events." These were woman events. Michelle has surpased that level of accomplishment. Who cares because that was a terrible analogy. And your burned out comment has no reality to it. It could have happened to Tiger or any young golfer. Michelle is in a world of her own and soon will own yours too. "Will Michele Wei travel the same route? It will be interesting to watch." Yes, that is a question, but to have the audacity to complain, instruct, or even suggest Michelle Wei shouldn't be trying to accomplish what she is doing now, is rediculous! Sad really. Did you watch the Evian match. She took second, but in my mind controlled the pace of the tournement. She was the one to beat. It is going to be this way for now on. I guess you'll have something to say about it anyway.

jim brown Michelle, it is time that you take control of your golf life. You should tell your father that you are not going to attempt any more men tournments. You have not won on the ladies tour, You certainly cannot win on the PGA men tour 7/16/2006
Dave "john is jelous" nice spelling of jealous by the way michelle. How do you know he's jealous? Did you ask him? I love when people make comments on these sites long after an article is written to say how wrong someone is. And "john mccenroe": Look at the date of the article. She was 14 WHEN THE ARTICLE WAS WRITTEN back in January of 2004. 7/6/2006

fred brodersen very interesting and perceptive article. 11/26/2005
Dave Gee, Bill Fennelly, it sure is easy to make a comment like yours nearly two years after an article was written. Where was your comment on January 23rd, 2004? Do you pick the winners of football games after they're over? 10/17/2005
Bill Fennelly I know it was over a year ago (John Berkovich, 1/23/2004 ) when you offered your opinion on Miss Wei, but are you ready to eat your words?
Bill Fennelly, League City, Texas

Tiger she's good and one rich girl now.... 10/15/2005
hf michelle's shorts 10/13 - way too short
pros should follow club rules on attire as youth need to
she makes enough money to have longer shorts made
10/14/2005
Rick I'm not sure why someone would call this writer a wanker. It is easy to wait nearly two years after the article was written to make a comment such as look at her now. The article was written in January 04 and the wanker comment in October 05 and obviously Wei is a better golfer today than two years ago. The writer wasn't critical of Wei nor does he hope she fails. He was simply saying give her some time and let her prove herself first. She is proving herself now and notice the writers final comment: It will be interesting to watch. There is a big difference between analysis and criticism. 10/10/2005
Craig John your a wanker....look at this girl now!!!! 10/5/2005
nick She will not go anywhere on the lesbian professional golf association, and she talks about pga tour. she is terrible, and ugly 6/26/2005
A Punahou Admir I think Michelle has a remarkable skill and potential. For a 14 year old she has poise and talent tho a loss hurts her as much as any 14 year old. Perhaps too much is being placed on her shoulders too soon. I would think burn our could occur if her mentors push her into too many competitions at the expense of some normal life. Maybe both cannot be accomplished. She does have a game and lots of time to develop and learn. I hope she does for I stand in awe od her drives and excepts for some lapses her short game is impresssive 6/28/2004
Patricia Kelly go for it
go all the way
live your dream
5/4/2004
carson i think that is amazing 3/16/2004
Vernon Bruce .I do not agree; If Michelle wants to play golf and at the highest level. Let it be...
All she needs to do is to stay with her game and not be influenced by the comments of
ill-wishers.
She will develop as she plays and I say, "More Power to Her".
