Asperger's Disorder is often misdiagnosed as Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD), though evident as early as age 3 (while pathological narcissism cannot be safely diagnosed prior to early adolescence).

Tarnabit Once I was called narcissistic after taking a stupid personality test. I told four therapists that I was narcisstic and none-believed me or would treat me. The reason was because no narcissist admitts it or seeks therapy for it. Catch-22. Then an psychiatrist told me the truth, the field is dominated by politics and hold little or no scientific validity. That man saved my life and sanity and incouraged me to be the person I am instead of what some stupid personality test suggests. I have now met several mental health professionals who acknowledge that the DSM 4, the current diagnostic manual, is politically and financially motivated and not motivated by science. Just be yourself and try to be positive to yourself and others. 9/3/2009
Joe Narcissists don't want to believe they are narcissists. Asperger's is a convenient alternative to the denying narcissist. The author of this article is such a personality. 6/7/2009
mayapple Haven't heard of anyone having avoidant disorder being misdiagnosed with Aspergers or vice versa. I think that's why we need mental health professional experts. The bottom line is in MHO is many of these mental disorders are too similar for non-experts to sufficiently diagnose.

Norah does anyone know if it's common for a female with Asperger's Syndrome to be misdiagnosed as having Avoidant Personality Disorder? 6/23/2004
