US Defends Role for Evangelical Christian

The Pentagon stepped up to defend the high-level appointment of an evangelical Christian general who has described America's "war on terror" as a struggle between Judeo-Christian values and Satan. Lieutenant General William Boykin, a veteran of the elite Delta Force, is to head the hunt...

open_mind Our freedoms have absolutely nothing to do with "'...Lame-brain' Christian goofballs..." Contrary to popular misconception several of our founding fathers were not all Christian; many were Deists, Unitarian, and an assortment of other beliefs. The men who led the United States in its revolution against England, who wrote the Declaration of Independence and put together the Constitution, were not Christians by any stretch of the imagination.

Some of the founding fathers such as: Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Thomas Paine, James Madison, Benjamin Franklin, Ethan Allen, Patrick Henry, made statements that were outside of common Christian belief. Thomas Jefferson even said that the Bible was dunghill; not a belief I personally hold.

People that believed in the freedom of choice, not right wing conservative Christianity founded this country. Christians often quote the "In God We trust" that is printed on the dollar as proof that we are a Christian nation. It says God, not "In Jesus We Trust". It also does not say the Christian God. Remember that Allah is Arabic for God, we could very well read it as "In Allah We Trust", and it would hold the same meaning.

I served 8 years in the Army as a paratrooper at Fort Bragg. I dedicated several years of my life to the protection of this country, and I am not a Christian; several of my fellow soldiers were not Christian; many were Wiccan. Christianity had nothing to do with our feeling of service to our nation, a nation founded under God, not the Christian God, and definitely not under Jesus.

THINK FOR YOURSELF, DON’T BE SOMEONE ELSE’S PARROT!!!

Boyd A. Smith It is truly encouraging to see the inspiration that the courage of Lt.General Boykin has given to Christians! Over the past 30-40 years, public expression, discussion, and debate of 'Judeo-Christian thought' has been systematically marginalized by the godless Left. I was one of those on the Left 30 years ago, so I understand how infuriating it is for them to hear what seems meaningless nonsense from Christians. What is so puzzling to me today is that the 'Lemmings on the Left' can not see that the very freedom of expression they enjoy is a direct consequence of those 'Lame-brain' Christian goofballs .... The ones that formed this country..(and I happen to be a 'person of color)..and The ones that are willing to sacrifice their own lives to give the opportunity for FREEDOM TO ALL! And just as with Jesus Christ, that opportunity is NOT COERCED..... some will accept it and some will reject it, but ALL are FREE TO CHOOSE ...because somebody sacrificed their life! THANK GOD!!! 10/28/2003
open_mind It sounds as if most of the people that post here are Christian puppets. Think for yourself and not parrot your religious leaders. If you truly looked at the real Jesus you would see that he would neither condone the actions of the Muslim terrorist states or the actions of the Bush administration.

The intentions here don't appear to be the eradication of terrorist nations, but rather to exert our influence on a part of the world that holds the vast wealth of oil.

Our support for Israel is not as innocent as we try to make it seem. It is to attempt to bring to pass the Biblical prophecies of the Bible. Luke 31: 7-36, Isaiah 62:2, Isaiah 51:3, Ezekiel 36. If it is in God’s plan for Israel to be a state than it will remain so without our support. Why don’t we hold Israel accountable for their actions as well as the terrorist groups such as the PLO?

We should spend more energy on a real terrorist nation that can hurt America a whole lot more, North Korea. We have not made any real moves toward North Korea like we have in Iraq and Afghanistan. The people of North Korea are starving because of a corrupt regime. He has nuclear potential and missiles that can launch over Japan, yet we have not made a military move on them. WHY???

Maybe because they don’t have either oil or a place in Biblical prophecy. Stop being a hypocrite and apply the same measure to all.

Dim I see that the short sound bites which the LA Times allowed you to hear have led you to some amazing conclusions. What was General Boykin talking about? That might be the first question to ask before assuming that a Christian Fundamentalist is leading an "anti-Jihad" and granny is coming out of her pew with an M-16 on Sunday Morning.

Gen. Boykin is referring to spiritual issues - this is why he is talking to the church as the "army of God", as the bible tells the Christian to put on the "full armor of Christ" when referring to knowledge of the scripture.

In the "idol" reference he had been speaking of the warlord and his love of money - "man cannot serve two masters, God and money - he will hate the one and love the other". Gen. Boykin was referring to the fact that this warlord was not devout at all but was really an "idolater" - worshiping money.

This would likely not be very clear to a journalist not familiar with Christian teaching and obviously not clear to anyone from intentionally short inflammartory quotes.

Read a book. Perhaps the Constitution (start with the first amendment, it's a good one), then maybe a bit of the Bible, where it says a Christian should testify. Then go back to the constitution where we have freedom to worship (this would include testifying), and that one's beliefs cannot prevent one from holding any office in this country. After considering those things perhaps the PC thoughts you have might be illuminated to be the anti Christian anti freedom discrimination proposals that they are.

martha salter Gen. boykin is my hero, he speaks the truth,God bless him, who cares if he offended a few,I hope he stands his ground. where"s the polls?,Ill vote for him. 10/23/2003
Kakimu This Boykin calls a spade a spade. I love him. God give us more Boykins. God Bless Boykin. May Boykin prosper. 10/23/2003
newhumanist The paucity of argument on this thread is shocking. Not one person posting in support of Gen. Boykin has put forward an argument, much less a coherent one. Is this how Christian fundamentalists argue? By shouting meaningless phrases? This isn't the haleluja convention. We're talking about an extremely serious issue here. Can someone who makes such crass statements as Gen. Boykin did help prevent terrorism, or is he going to escalate the 'war' to the next state: an out-and-out fundamentalist Islam vs fundamentalist Christian battle? 10/22/2003

Vernon Howard General Boykin is 100% correct!!! 10/22/2003
newhumanist P Mendez,

Gen. Boykin's comments were neither sweet, nor to the point. They are inflammatory and ignorant of the direction that world opinion of the US war on terror is heading in. To put it on the same level as bin Laden's Jihad risks losing the United States a large measure of the little sympathy the rest of the world has left over for it. Is this how generals, specifically those fighting 'terror', should go about their business? By alienating their friends and giving fodder to their enemies?

P. Mendez Jr. Well said, Gen. Boykin. Sweet and to the point. 10/22/2003

Esam Demian To Newhumanist:
Islam has declared us the enemy and they started, I wonder how would you feel if you were to live under Taliban or in the peacful socity of Saudi Arabia where you can not listen to music or see a woman's face ??
You should be thankful we still have people like Gen Boykin and secretary Rumsfeld.
10/21/2003
Esam Demian God bless you Gen. Boykin.
You represent the majority of Americans who still have some brain cells left and know who the enemy is.
10/21/2003
newhumanist Such comments as found above are worrying. Not only have Islamic fundamentalists declared holy war on the West, Christian fundamentalists seem to be doing the same in return. Add to that a vision of the coming apocalypse and you have a recipe for nuclear disaster.
Tell me, D. Vander Hamm and Daniel Mendell, do you really believe that "God" is on your side?
10/21/2003
daniel mendell i must add another comment, after reading the stupidness that 'newhumanitst' espouses! this IS a religious war! apparently newhumanist is void of GOD (i.e. Christian religion/belief) in his miserable life. GOD bless America! 10/20/2003
daniel mendell I completely support General Boykin in defining the real enemy as Satan. And in my humble opinion Satan is working hard on this country, too! 10/20/2003
newhumanist This is madness! Boykin is advocating a religious war. How can any sane person support such a thing?
What is more, how do you support your assertion that the "majority of Americans" are behind the Boykinoid approach to terrorism prevention?
10/20/2003
Ken Waibel Boykin is right on and has my complete support. I believe he represents the majority of Americans. See Mike LasSalle's comments. 10/20/2003
newhumanist D. Vander Hamm offers a dangerously blasee defence of Boykin. This man is charged with a very important role in the US administration. The US having a strong secular tradition he should be keeping his religion to himself, not claiming that "We in the army of God, in the house of God, kingdom of God have been raised for such a time as this."
Then again, maybe it is better he makes his opinions known to all so that people can make up their minds about whether they want to be led by religious fanatics or not.
10/20/2003
D. Vander Hamm While General Boykin has every right to speak his mind anywhere to any group, he was addressing a church group. He also stated that terrorist activity was not representative of Islam.
Your presentation of the 'facts' is dangerous and inflammatory.
